James O. DeVaney, Jr. was born in Florence, AL and grew up in Macon, MS, passed away at the age of 101 on Wednesday, December 30, 2020. James enlisted in the U.S. Army and participated in Utah Beach Invasion on D-Day as a member of the Army Signal Corps and retired from the U.S. Army with the rank of Major. After the war he moved to Mobile and retired from Bell Telephone Engineering Department after 45 years of service. He is a member of Dauphin Way Methodist Church and was a member of Aba Temple as a Shriner, VFW and various other civic organizations during his life in Mobile.
Mr. DeVaney is preceded in death by his wife, Marie Mitternight DeVaney, parents, James O. DeVaney, Sr. and Mildred Dowdy DeVaney, grandsons, James O. DeVaney, IV, David Christopher DeVaney, brothers Gilbert Douglas DeVaney and Russell Lloyd DeVaney. He is survived by his son, James O. DeVaney, III, M.D. (Margaret Halliday) and grandsons; George Michael DeVaney of Bay Minette, AL and Martin Mitternight DeVaney of New Orleans, LA.
Visitation for Mr. DeVaney will be held at Pine Crest Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. with Graveside services in Pine Crest Cemetery immediately following with military honors.
