“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Psalm 23:6
On October 6, 2025, Janie Newberry peacefully stepped from this life into eternity, surrounded by her family. Janie was born to Neil Jonathan and Donie Mae McMillian on July 18, 1938. She lived a wonderful 87 years on this earth.
All her life, Janie was full of grace, and compassion, and plenty of giggles. She was the perfect balance of softness and no-nonsense, and she made everyone around her want to do and be better. She shared the gospel by living it out in her kindness and unconditional love for her husband, her family, and her church community.
Janie is preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, Benny Newberry (died January 19, 2019.); her sister Julia Emanuel (Doll) Joyce Gaston, her brother Burns Aubrey (Bud) Mcmillan, and grandchildren Christy and Hope Arthur.
She is survived by her four daughters and their spouses: Jennifer Newberry, Beverly and Richard Flowers, Julia and Wayne Malone, and Mary Jo and Brian Breland; Grandchildren: Lauren and James Harred, Leigha and Frank Henley, Audrey and Ken Boatman, Sara and Allie Barker, Justin and Bayleigh Malone, Lindsey and Jules Starr, Rick and Allyson Flowers, Tyler and Rebecca Malone, Benjamin and Hannah Breland, Samantha and Griffin Mullinix, Mona and Rob Byrd, and Emily and Chris Jones; Great Grandchildren: Lila; June, Johnathan, Mackenzie, Grady, Denver, Memphis and Houston; Kennadie, Shelton and Chandler (Hazel); Maisy, Anniston, Jesús and Miller; Dillan, Chris, Charleston and Everly; Benny, Quinton and Dawson; Frances and Joel; Seth, Reid, Eliza Jane and Clara Jo.
“To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.” 2 Corinthians 5:8. Though her family will miss her warm smile, her infectious laugh and her gentle spirit, we are so thankful that she has been made whole again in the presence of our Savior.
A service to celebrate her beautiful life will be held on Friday, October 10, 2025, at Crawford Baptist Church at 11:00 am. The family will receive visitors before the service, starting at 10:00 am. Following the service, she will be laid to rest at Pine Crest Cemetery (1939 Dauphin Island Parkway, Mobile, AL, 36605).
Family and friends are welcome and encouraged to attend and remember a life well-lived.
