She was born on August 13, 1958, in Mobile, a city she dearly loved and proudly called home—the birthplace of the original Mardi Gras.
Joann was the daughter of Joe Nettles Morton and Helen Sharp Morton and was preceded in death by her late husband, Jones Walter Franklin, affectionately known as Jay.
She carried forward a legacy of kindness, warmth, and a deep love of Mardi Gras. She was a devoted mother to her son, Stephen Joseph Patterson, and a loving mother-in-law to Jordan Miller Patterson. One of her greatest joys was being “Gaga” to her cherished grandson, Lucas Whittington Patterson.
Known for her open heart, Joann was a true friend to all. She welcomed people just as they were and made a point to include everyone. Her compassion and acceptance left a lasting impression on everyone she met.
Joann had a deep love for animals, especially cats, and is survived by her beloved cat, Skipper. She also shared a special companionship with her partner, Glenn James. Together, they enjoyed many happy trips to Orange Beach with family, where Joann found peace watching the boats pass by and taking in the beauty of the water.
Joann was also a passionate fan of The Alabama Crimson Tide and enjoyed watching the games with family and friends.
Services will be held on February 12, 2026, at Radney Funeral Home in Mobile, Alabama. Visitation will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. A brief graveside prayer will follow. Pastor Chase Alford will officiate.

Joann’s spirit was gentle, kind, and full of love. She will be remembered for her love of Mardi Gras, Alabama Football and her loyalty to all who she considered family. Her memory will live on in the hearts of her family and friends, and in the spirit of Mardi Gras.
