Tom Gwin, known to his family as "T-Bomb", passed away peacefully on January 9, 2020 following a brief illness. A lifelong resident of Mobile when he wasn't in the air. Tom graduated from UMS and the Univ. of Alabama before becoming a pilot in the Air Force. He valiantly flew 422 combat missions from 1968-70 and was awarded numerous medals during his military career including the Vietnam Service Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He continued to serve in the Air Force Reserves until his retirement as a Lt. Colonel in 1992 and was a "hurricane hunter" during Frederic in 1979. Tom also enjoyed a lengthy career as a commercial pilot and retired as a Captain for Continental in 2001.
He is survived by his son T.K. Gwin and fiance' Carrie Walsh of Atlanta, his life-long partner Nancy Gwin of Mobile, sister Carolyn Hammond (Warren) of Mobile, step-daughter Amy Middleton (Charles) of West Palm Beach, granddaughters Perry and Ansley Middleton, niece Gwin Hammond of Denver, cousins including Gloria Roskowski of Mobile and dear friends including Rose Pikor of Sterling Heights, MI. The family also wishes to thank Kitty George and Stanley Huntington for their years of dedication and friendship.
A visitation will be held at Radney Funeral Home on Saturday, January 25, 2020 from 12:00pm-1:00pm followed by a memorial service at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the charity of your choice
