Feb. 28, 1917 - Nov. 5, 2014 John Everett Stone, 1917-2014, died at Westminster Village on November 5, 2014. John Everett was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil Vaughan and Myrtle Henry Stone; his brother, Cecil Vaughn Stone, Jr.; and his dearly beloved wife of 68 years, Philomene Miller Stone. He is survived by sons Dr. John Everett Stone, Jr. (Betty) and Robert Cecil Stone (Jan); grandchildren Robert Andrew Stone (Cati), John Everett Stone III, and Sarah Stone Pasquinucci (Rob); and great-grandchildren Leah Diamond Stone and Robert Francis Pasquinucci. Also surviving are his sister, Betty Stone McNeil; nephews Hoyle Graham McNeil, Jr. (Kim); Bruce Stone McNeil (Marlene); and niece Marsha McNeil Sherman (Steve). John grew up in Knoxville, TN, and graduated from Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, TN. There he played varsity football and baseball and met the love of his life, Philomene Miller. Soon after graduation, as World War II was just beginning, he joined the Marine Corps and went to OCS. Before John was deployed, he and Phil were married in 1942. He fought in the Pacific Theatre as a member of the 2nd Marine Division, participating in such key battles as Okinawa, Tinian, Tarawa, Guadalcanal, and Saipan, where he was awarded the Bronze Star. After returning from the war, John remained in the Marine Corps Reserves, earning the rank of Colonel before his retirement. His professional career was spent in Personnel Management, or, as it is now called, Human Resources. He retired in 1982 while living in Kingsport, Tennessee. John and Phil moved to Mobile from Kingsport in 1994. They quickly joined and became active in Dauphin Way United Methodist Church and enjoyed the fellowship of that congregation. Always wanting to be in control of the important decisions, John initiated the move to Westminster Village in 1999. He and Phil continued to embrace an independent and adventurous life style, enjoying travel, friends, and family. John remained intellectually engaged throughout his 97 years and embarked on each new chapter of his life with zeal, strength and determination. He will be remembered with great love and respect. The family will receive friends at Dauphin Way United Methodist Church at 11:00 on Saturday, November 8, with the service to follow at noon in the Carl Adkins Chapel of Dauphin Way. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Dauphin Way United Methodist Church, 1507 Dauphin Street, Mobile, AL 36604; to Carson-Newman University, 2130 S.
