June Swanson Capell, 81, of Mobile, passed away on Thursday, September 26, 2019 at her home following a short illness. Born on June 5, 1938, in Monroeville, Alabama, she was the daughter of Charles and Helen Swanson Capell. Miss Capell was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Nancy Capell Cates.
A graduate of Monroe County High School, Miss Capell graduated from the University of Montevallo with a B.S. in Mathematics and Louisiana State University with a M.A. in Mathematics. Post Masters study was completed at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa; Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ; and The University of South Alabama, Mobile.
Miss Capell began her long career as a math educator in Mobile at Murphy High School. She later taught math at Wright’s Girls’ School, and spent 24 years at Mary G. Montgomery High School serving as Department Chairman before retiring. She was a member of Gamma Xi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma.
She was an active member of Dauphin Way United Methodist Church. As an original member of the Prayer Shawl Ministry, Miss Capell used some of her many gifts to sew labels on over 5000 donated items, crafted over 40 prayer shawls, made tatted and Hardanger crosses that were given for special occasions, and created countless ribbon crosses to be used as Bible book marks, all done with a gentle, selfless spirit. Since 2014 Miss Capell has sewn for Care Bags Foundation, sewing some 850 fabric bags that the foundation fills with items for displaced, abused and disadvantaged children around the globe.
She is survived by her sisters, Miss Mary Helen Capell of Mobile, and Dr. Peggy Capell of Forest Park, Georgia; nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Mary Helen and Peggy would like to thank all the caregivers who provided care for June during her illness. In particular, we want to express appreciation to DeAundra Mendenhall, JoAnn Bozman ad Voncile Agee for their care and compassion during the final days of her life.
Visitation will be held at Radney Funeral Home in Mobile on Thursday, October 3, 2019 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Graveside services will be held at the Baptist Cemetery in Monroeville, AL at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 5, 2019
