
Captain Lawrence Shafer, USN, Retired, passed away at the age of 87 on Saturday, October 7, 2017 in Mobile, AL. He was born in Philadelphia, PA and was a resident of Mobile since 1983. Captain Shafer received a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and also had a M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the U.S. Navy Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. During his 28 years of active duty, he served shipboard as engineering duty officer and chief engineer. He also served as Deputy Supervisor of Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, MS, Deputy to the Assistant Secretary of the Navy and project manager for several classes of ships. Captain Shafer is survived by his wife, Betty L. Shafer and daughter, Melanie Mitchell of Ellicottville, New York. He is also survived by his brother, Neil Shafer and nephew, Paul Shafer both of Havertown, PA and niece, Kim Shafer of New York, NY. Captain Shafer will be buried at sea in a ceremony performed by the U. S. Navy on a ship in the Pacific Ocean. Condolences may be offered at www.radneyfuneralhome-mobile.com.
