

Born May 21, 1929 in Hartselle, AL to Aubrey L. and Itra T. Nichols. As an infant, his family moved to Houston, TX. He attended High School at Allen Academy in Bryan, Tx. Nick graduated from Tulane University in 1951 with a BS in Pre Med. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corp in 1951. During the Korean War, he served as a patrol leader in the 1st Marine Division, 1st Recon Company. He retired from the Corp as a captain in 1953.
Before leaving for Korea, Nick married the love of his life, Emma (Winnie) Miles on September 9, 1951. After the Marine Corp, Nick and Winnie returned to New Orleans where Nick graduated from Medical School in 1958. He did his internship at the old Mobile General Hospital in Mobile, AL and his residency at the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO in internal medicine with a specialty in gastroenterology.
The Nichols returned to Mobile where he became Mobile’s first gastroenterologist. Dr. Nichols loved his patients and Providence Hospital. He felt honored to be on the board when the decision was made to move Providence Hospital west. His family has been members of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church since 1962 and he served as a challis bearer from 1976-1996. Dr. Nichols was the house doctor at Wilmer Hall Children’s Home until his retirement on July 1, 2000. He was a member of the Marine Corp League Honor Guard Post 49. He held the positions of Recruiting Officer and Commander in Chief for the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 39. Dr. Nichols loved his “Lunch Bunch” buddies at Dr. Sid Phillips farm, hunting, fishing, boating (esp. his trip to the Abacos), ballroom dancing with Winnie and his annual reunion with his fellow Marines from the Korean War USMC 1st Recon Company.
Nick C. Nichols is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Emma Winifred Nichols, two sons, Rick and Jeff (Joann) Nichols, one daughter, Lydia (Joe) Moore, eight grandchildren, Kayli Nichols, Niki Nichols, Maleesa (Nate) Redish, Jerry (Candi) McKean, Nicholas Barry, Cricket Mansfield, Alex Nichols, Ashley Nichols, four great-grandchildren Kaiden Redish, Khail Bing, Frances Grace McKean, Ever Redish and many cousins, brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends that loved him. Mickey Miles, Mark Miles, Chris Miles, Timmy Miles, Gary Miles and Trey Jones will serve as pallbearers. The honorary pallbearers will be Arnell Dubose, Don McWilliams and Jimmy Karagan.
Visitation will be Sunday, April 19 from 5-8pm at Pine Crest Funeral Home. A short visitation on Monday, April 20 from 11-12 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church will be followed by a service in the church at 12pm. Internment will follow in Pine Crest Cemetery. The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to the staff at Providence Hospital and Mobile Infirmary as well as his sitters that he dearly loved. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wilmer Hall Children’s Home, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church or Christ Episcopal Church.
