The first child of Otis and Mary Margaret Wittner, Carl was a lifelong resident of Mobile. He was born Friday, February 13, 1942. He was a 1961 graduate of Murphy High School where he excelled at baseball, even being scouted by the San Francisco Giants. He attended Troy University where he continued his baseball career. It was there that he met a beautiful, intelligent young woman from the Wiregrass, the love of his life, Barbara Jean Alford. The two were happily married for just shy of 55 years.
Carl graduated from Wallace Community College and leveraged his knowledge in the burgeoning field of computer technology to help launch the data processing operations at the Mobile Infirmary Medical Center, spending his entire career of 38 years as their Operations Manager.
In his time away from work, he was an avid golfer and together he and Barbara loved to travel, a passion that carried them into their retirement. Their adventures took them to places all around the world, including Italy, France, Alaska, New England, the Caribbean, Ireland, Israel, Canada and Panama. It was their travels throughout the United States with their family, however, that were his particular favorites.
Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, and his parents Otis and Mary Margaret.
Carl is survived by his daughters, Wendy Wittner Stewart (Joe) of Marietta, GA and Leah Wittner Bond (Mark) of Alabaster, AL, his sister, Margaret Cargill of Dawsonville, GA, his brother, Mike Wittner of Mobile, AL., his grandchildren Will, Mary and Jack, numerous nieces and nephews and many extended family that he loved dearly.
A celebration of Carl's life will be held on February 14, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Springhill Baptist Church, in Mobile, Alabama, with a visitation at 10:00 AM in the church sanctuary.
