I've found in writing you letters 
I feel connected to you
This time i wrote a poem 
Its my way to talk to you.....

You were thrilled the day when I was born
And put into your arms
Our hearts connected, you stared at me
And swore to me no harm 

When i was just 1 year old
Staring at our Christmas tree
Your mind was filled with wonder and awe
Of what my thoughts might be

On the stage, a dress of gold
Your eyes glued to the stage
There you watched me dance and twirl
Like a bird without a cage

A strike, a hit or maybe foul
You always cheered for me
I still see you in the stands
You were always proud Daddy

Check your seatbelt, mirrors and tires
Keep your eyes alert and wide
You taught me how to drive a car
How I loved to earn your pride

A tree lined park, a dress of white
Walk down a flowered aisle
My hand you gave another man
A tear shone in your smile

They loved you so much PuBah 
Still their veins flow your blood through 

As years flew by, eye to eye
We may not have always seen
But through it all, we worked it out
Your advice I'd always seek

Time began pick up pace

I cared for you throughout that time
The years that were your last

I can't forget the way it felt
To know your end was near
I talked to you about our time
Of good times through the years 

I'll always remember clearly 
The moment your heart stopped beating
I felt my soul was torn apart
But I knew who you were meeting

Jesus took your hand in his
And away with Him you flew 
Stanley and your mom and dad
Were waiting in Heaven for you

Although I know you're home and whole
I hurt because you're gone
The pain's in knowing when your heart stopped
Mine kept beating on

Although I'll always miss you so
I know we'll be again
The way we were on God's great earth 
Best friends til never ends

Dad -
I'm no longer "comfortably numb". I prayed to feel the weight and pain of your death for over a month. I didn't realize what I was asking for. There is no pain like this. Nothing could possibly hurt more than this. I have been so dependant on you and wanting so hard to make you always proud, that I put everyone and everything else aside for years. I think I met your expectations, but now I'm having to learn to let other people in. It's hard because I only want you right now. People don't realize I didn't just lose my Dad. I lost my very best friend, my teacher, my mentor, my encyclopedia of any and everything. I lost the man who rocked me all day and night after I got tubes put in my ears. I lost the man who taught me classical music, each composer and how to pick which composer wrote the music based on the first few lines. I lost the man who taught me all about dinosaurs and took me to the first museum to see them...yet held me when I was scared. (I still have the picture of this, it's my favorite.) I lost the man who taught me to love the Symphony, opera and ballet. This same man taught me how to play ball, build things and think like a scientist does. This same man walked me down the aisle to marry my husband, tears in your eyes. This same man was there for the birth of every one of my girls and you loved them as only a PuBah can do. You were the only man I knew who knew the answer to any and every question I had. But you wouldn't just give it to me, you made me work for it. You made me think for myself. Whenever I made the wrong decision, you let me know how I'd disappointed you, but never hesitated to forgive me and put me back on the right path. In the last few years, when you were really sick, you always put up such a good front so we didn't see how much you hurt, or see how bad you really were. Your first priority wasn't yourself, it was always us. You made sure there was already a plan in place to give Mom financial security for the day you left. After all these years of watching you struggle daily, I never thought the day would actually come that you would really die. Not just the concept of death, but really dead. But that time is here and it hurts like hell. But I do know that I never left your side in those last weeks unless I absolutely had to. We talked and laughed about everything. There was nothing left unsaid. And I'll never regret all the time I put towards you. I needed that extra time with you and you honestly became more than just my Dad. So the day you died, I didn't just lose my Dad, I lost Phillip Smith, my very best friend. I miss you so much.

Mr. Smith, 
It was a privilege meeting you and your wife for the first time this year, and on several occasions after that. 
I looked out for you frequently since our last meeting. Eventually I was brought here.  It was a pleasure meeting you and your family.

To the man who taught me what it really means to work hard, to lay yourself down for others, the man who taught me wisdom and integrity, knowledge and understanding... to the man who taught me how to ask questions and think for myself, the man who taught me about the stars, and taught me about science, who gave me a thorough answer to the simplest question... the man who pulled the pain out of my fingertips when I was in pain, and held a wet rag on my head when I had a fever... to the man who held me in his lap when my heart broke and helped me plot revenge, the man who always overreacted when I got hurt because I was his baby... to the man who wasn't afraid to tell me when I was wrong and the man who gave me his blessing... to the man who made me laugh and who never missed watching me dance... To the man who will never be like anyone else to me - I miss you. I love you.

Here i am writing to you on this page again as my own personal journal to you. It's been exactly one month today since I lost you, Dad. You'd be so proud of how we have pulled together as a family. Thanksgiving was especially rough without you, but we did carry on the tradition of watching Trains, Planes and Automobiles and laughing our butts off at how perfectly Steve Martin portrayed you.   Each day it sinks in a little bit more that you're not coming back, especially when we decorated the Christmas tree last night. I was always thought it was the best watching you untangle the lights, with all types of wonderful and pissed off words flowing from your mouth. Or how, in the freezing cold, you would let us "help" you put up lights outside, while you're the one who did all of the work..You would have loved how the girls looked over each ornament and how we told stories about you and Christmas's when I was little. I didnt tell them about you putting your shoes in the ashes from the fireplace and walking through the house to make it look like Santa had come down the chimney to deliver the presents. Only because Mark and I will carry on that tradition this year and every year. I miss you and it hurts like nothing ever has. But I will be ok. I always thought the day you died, I would die right along with you because you were always my #1 in life. But, here we are during the holidays, the time it's most obvious you're not here. And we are OK. I've heard it gets easier with time, and even though I'm not sure I agree with that cliche, eventually we will be able to look back on our lives spent with you and laugh and be so very grateful that you were ours. I know everyone thinks their dad is the best dad that ever lived, but I KNOW my Dad IS the best. That's why God called you home so soon. I love you

I'm sorry I wasn't able to speak for you. I know that you knew Bill was going to let me share my memories during your service...if I was able to.
But I found myself, that day, at that moment, sitting beside mom. And Mark was on my other side. And my three babies, who needed to be as close to me as they could, were behind me. And You. Even though I was in a hard daze, staring where you were lying, in front of me, I felt you there too. In that moment, between mom and Mark, my kids and you...I felt like I was where I was meant to be. And I couldn't move. I couldn't even look behind me. So, I chose not to stand up there.
And I couldn't leave an empty chair beside mom.

But my thoughts will slow down long enough, one day, so I can come back here with them.

Dad,
I feel like when I write in your guestbook, its like talking to you. Maybe they have the internet in Heaven and you can read all of the wonderful things people have written and will continue to write about/to you. If not, I know you're always with me, even if I can't physically see you.  Just wanted to let you know that when I voted yesterday, I voted for your pick for president, even though I didn't want to vote at all. And you would be so excited that "your" party won the House and Senate and Hilary will not have control over the country you loved so much. Like our joke goes: "My dad always Trumps you, no matter what" I woke up so excited to talk to you about how the election turned out, then I remembered you're gone. So I'm writing you here, while sitting in your chair. I miss you, I love you and can't wait to see you in Heaven.

Phillip - I can't begin to tell you how much Jeannie and I looked forward to visiting you and Donna each and every time we came to Nashville.  That was always part of our trip.  It wasn't completed until we came by to visit with all of you.  I will always remember those times!  Rest in peace.

My grandfather has always been a huge inspiration in my life. He's the one that sparked curiosity in my life. He showed me how to look at the world in a more open minded way. Out of everyone I knew when I was younger, he was the one who brought across my scientific side. Every small conversation would be riddled with questions that would lead to even more questions. As possibly the shyest/quietest of 8 grandchildren of his, our relationship wasn't too defined, but it certainly was there. We had a good understanding with each other, our conversations could be summed up with a few words. We had an uncountable amount of fond memories, and I will truly miss him.

Dad, this candle represents the light of your life. Even when this candle flickered out with your last breath, I know that brightness went with you to Heaven, to where you will be lit within until the end of eternity. Keep that light, it's what made such an unforgettable impression on the very many lives you touched. I love you Dad

Daddy, I don't know what I'm going do or how I'm to breathe without you. You ALWAYS had the answers. Who am I going to call to prove I'm right when someone and I get into a debate, without you here? Who will try his best to keep me on the right path, but will be the first to forgive and protect me when I do mess up? Who will teach the generations to come how to do "Snapper"? Who will now be the first person I call with exciting or crushing news? Who is going to sit out on the deck with me at gaze at the stars and point out each constellation? 

You will. Because you ARE here in spirit and Heaven and Jesus have qiven you ALL the answers to every question we ever had. I cant wait to know as well, so we can continue to talk and debate the subject to death until the end of eternity in the house "Our Father" has set for us. Dad, God used you to save me. H is for Heaven....you saw heaven while you were gone for 20 minutes and came back to tell me that Heaven is real. Days after you passed away, I was saved in the name our Lord in Christ, Jesus.

I'm so very thankful that I was able to care for you for over 3 years. I knew I was on borrowed time, but that doesn't make this easier. You were my focus for so long that letting go is almost impossible. But with God carrying our crosses, mom and I will move past this and rest in your peace. I love you Daddy and will miss you more than I thought possible. But your blood run through my veins and into my girls veins. "PuBah" will lever leave our hearts and will tell stories of you down through the generations and you will ALWAYS live on in our heart. Forever and always until we meet in heaven, I love you from the bottom of my heart

Phil, what in the world are you doing you're not supposed to leave this soon! Phillip was one of the smartest people I've ever known. We worked at Physio-Control together. I lived in Oklahoma City and he lived in Tulsa at the time. I always looked forward to his visits to OKC. We became good friends instead of just coworkers. As someone said, Phillip was a teacher. While I was around many salesmen in my life, including my dad, I never met someone that could deliver a concept as well as Phil. He knew just what you wanted, and needed to know, and delivered his thoughts in a very well planned manner, always meticulous and intently listening to your understanding, questions and concerns.

Donna, what can I say? I'm sorry. You guys deserved many more years together. He left you with probably the best gift he could give, which was his/your wonderful daughters. Missie, he was so proud of you. We talked about our daughters a lot since you and my daughters are near the same age and he was so very proud of you. My daughter had great respect for your dad and I remember one time taking a picture of him and she ran over to be in the photo with him. 

And Emily you don't know me but I remember your daddy talking about you at length. One day he was describing to me how he watched you looking at the Christmas tree as a baby. He described how much he enjoyed the wonderment you expressed looking at the ornaments on the tree. It was a very special time for him and you one of those moments that happens just between you and your child. He was wondering what you were thinking and surmising your thoughts, and how beautiful it was that he could share the that special time of you learning and experiencing something new. There was also a little regret that as parents, when we are younger, we are too busy to experience these 'minor' experiences that only happen once, that we look back on as major events. Since you came later in life you gave him some of those times to ponder that he wished he had shared more with Missie but was too busily focused on everyday work and getting ahead. He was one of the few men that I knew who reflected on the importance of having fun and spending quality time with the family. Julie, you came about later so I don't know you, but knowing your father, you probably gave him the best opportunity to spoil a little girl, that I'm sure he relished. 

The name Phillip Smith, to me, simply means "quality." Such a great person. I know you all will miss him greatly, and I'm so sorry for your loss.

Phillip graciously and generously shared his family with ours for 22 years of holidays and birthdays. Our family away from home. I'll always cherish the memory of you at the grill making the best wings in town and doing what meant the most to you, being with and caring for your family. We love you, David and Carol

Mr. Smith was many things. He was a natural teacher who always had the patience to answer a sincerely asked question. He was an intelligent man who encouraged those around him to think a little more deeply. When he asked a question, he listened intently to the response. He was quick-witted and whip smart. Above all, he was a family man. The world is better because he was in it and those who knew him are better for it. 

I'll carry the lessons you taught me throughout my entire life, Mr. Smith, and I'll keep your family close. Thank you for being a wonderful neighbor, friend, mentor, and surrogate parent. You are deeply missed.

Our hearts are there in Mobile with you this week. I am heartbroken as Phillip was a huge part of my teen and adult years. He was always the one lighting up whatever room he was in. I am praying for you all. Love you bunches.

My heart goes out to you during this difficult time. I will continue to keep your entire family in my thoughts and prayers.

A good man gone too soon. You will always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you for gifting me with your precious daughter as my beautiful friend. I will love and miss you always. Rest In Peace Pubah.
