

Praful was born in Virsad, Gujarat, India, on June 7, 1938, to Rambhai and Chancharben Desai. He grew up in Mumbai, India, and graduated from BVM Engineering College with a degree in Civil Engineering. In 1965, he came to the United States to complete his master’s degree in Civil Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
Over a distinguished 45-year career, Praful specialized in superstructure engineering and helped design countless highway bridges throughout Alabama and Louisiana. Coming from humble beginnings, he built a life defined by hard work, quiet dignity, generosity, and humility.
Praful was married to his beloved wife, Kusum, for 60 years. Together, they were longtime residents of Mobile and an integral part of the Indian community of Mobile, forming deep friendships and touching many lives throughout the years.
Praful enjoyed traveling the world and visited more than 40 countries during his lifetime. He will be remembered for his gentle nature, disciplined mind, generous spirit, and deep devotion to family.
Praful was preceded in death by his parents, Rambhai and Chancharben Desai.
He is survived by his wife, Kusum Desai; his older son, Mounang Desai, and daughter-in-law, Urmi Desai; his grandsons, Ishaan and Rushil Desai; and his younger son, Swetang Desai.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at Radney Funeral Home. Arrangements are by Radney Funeral Home.
