Richard Stephen Sibley Sr., “Steve”, 85, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 10, 2023 in Mobile, Alabama. He was born to Richard Harvey Sibley and Annie Wolf Sibley on July 29, 1937 in Stapleton, Alabama. During his younger days, Steve was very active with the Mobile Jaycees, and was involved in the planning of events such as the Junior Miss Pageant, the Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo, and the Greater Gulf Coast State Fair. Steve spent the first twenty years of his career working with Cooper Stevedoring before eventually retiring from Springhill Memorial Hospital. In his spare time, Steve enjoyed gardening, and always had a green thumb. He loved watching the birds in his yard, and loved dogs and babies – he always seemed to have a way with both. Steve was a family man with a gentle nature. He was never very chatty, but when he spoke, one listened – he was always great at cracking a joke. Steve was old-fashioned, never allowing his wife to pump her own gas and always wearing at tie to church, weddings, and funerals. After retirement he loved to pick up his grandsons from school and ball practice, enjoying any time he got to spend with them. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend, and will be greatly missed.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Frances Akers Sibley; one son, Richard Stephen Sibley, Jr.; a daughter, Kathryn Sibley Odom (Larry); two grandsons, Shelby Stephen Irwin (Lindsey) and William Dawson Irwin (Morgan); one granddaughter, Angie Odom Vilchez (Miguel); three great-granddaughters; as well as a host of other cherished family and friends.
Visitation for Steve will be held Saturday, February 25, 2023 from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street in Mobile, Alabama, with a service in the chapel immediately following at 11 a.m.
