
Robert Verne Newsome, a native of St. Louis, Missouri and a longtime resident of Mobile, Alabama died on Thursday, March 22, 2012. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Carol Ann Newsome. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Florence Caroline Newsome; daughter, Nancy Alison (Andrew) Tanner; son, Robert Michael (Margaret) Newsome; granddaughters, Ashley Tanner McKeithan (Lee); Allison Tanner Allen (Jack), Ann Marie Newsome and Carol Delaune Newsome; great granddaughter, Mary Tanner McKeithan. Mr. Newsome received a degree in Chemical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis, MO in 1943. He then joined ALCOA (Aluminum Co. of America) at East St. Louis, Illinois as Junior Chemical Engineer, making alumina to produce aluminum for the war. He transferred with his family to the Mobile Alcoa Plant in 1961 as Senior Engineer from 1966 -1970 he was employed at the new Alcoa Plant in Perth, Western Australia as Technical Manager. He returned to the Mobile plant as Production and Technical Manager in 1970. He helped develop more efficient processes for alumina manufacture now used in several ALCOA plants. He retired from the Mobile plant in 1982. Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2012 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM at the funeral home. Private family graveside services to be held. In lieu of flowers family request memorials be made to a charity of your choice.
