There is one word that comes to mind when thinking about Sammy: devoted. He was devoted to hard work, devoted to family, devoted to his church, and devoted to God. Sammy was born the sixth child out of nine to Elbert Ernest Everett and Lodica Huff Everett on May 20, 1956, in Mobile, Alabama. From an early age, work ethic was ingrained in Sammy. He and his brothers started working as mere children, and his strong work ethic followed him throughout his entire life. Sammy became a boilermaker when he was 20 years old. He worked for Boiler-Tek – always as a superintendent, and for a while as foreman. Sammy even owned the business for a stint. He was a member of the Boilermaker Union Local 112 and retired after 35 years. All Sammy knew was hard work. He was goal oriented and had a knack for organization that made him a born leader.
The only hobby Sammy really made time for was travelling. He loved to travel. Sammy enjoyed driving to new places, and once at his destination, he would take the time to explore and absorb everything surrounding him. He enjoyed being outside, something he picked up in childhood.
Sammy met and married the love of his life, Sharon Lartigue Everett, in October of 1989. His mother had been attending church at St. Mary’s by the Sea, so the couple thought it would be a beautiful place to get married. They visited the church on and off over the years, until they renewed their vows after 25 years of marriage at the church, and realized it was their church home. This sparked a deep loyalty and devotion in Sammy and Sharon, and they have spent many years since involved in everything they could be at St. Mary’s by the Sea. Sammy has been a Junior and Senior Warden at the church, but he didn’t need a title for him to take care of the facilities – often fixing things around the church before anyone was aware they were broken. He was also the Crucifer for the church – literally carrying the cross every day. St. Mary’s by the Sea was very special to Sammy, and he found strength in the Lord between its four walls.
He was the one who took care of everything – at work, with his family, at church. Sammy was a generous soul, and very much a giver. He would do anything in his power to make sure he took care of everyone around him. Sammy seemed to be knowledgeable in everything. One of the biggest questions asked since his passing has been, “Who am I going to call now?” But in speaking with his family, we know that Sammy will live on through the knowledge and values he has instilled in the hearts of everyone who knew him.
Sammy was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Debbie Bishop; a brother, Ernest Everett; and his beloved granddaughter, Katie McDonald.
He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Sharon Lartigue Everett; children, Samual Jefferson Everett, Jr. “Sam” (Marie), Tiffany McDonald (Chris), and Michael Hartman, Jr.; bonus child, Erica Hartman; grandsons, Peyton McDonald and Michael Hartman, III; granddaughters, Madison Everett, Emily McDonald, Victoria Hartman, and Isabella Hartman; brothers, Michael Everett (Kathy), Terry Everett (Cindy), and Joe Everett; sisters, Jenney Trucks, Eland Tooley, and Pam Everett; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and other cherished family and friends.
Visitation for Sammy will be held on Thursday, July 10, 2025, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s by the Sea Episcopal, with a funeral service immediately following. Interment will be in Lartigue Cemetery.
