Born April 11, 1940 in Asheville, North Carolina, Sandra was the daughter of Wayne McClure and Margaret McGee Jones. Sandra grew up in Asheville and profoundly loved the beauty of the mountains. She attended elementary school and Lee H. Edwards High School in Asheville before continuing her education at Women’s College in Greensboro and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Arts. Sandra continued her formal education years later, graduating with a Masters in Liberal Arts from Harvard University in 1991.
Sandra moved to Mobile in 1964 where she raised her daughters, Amanda and Katherine. She immersed herself in civic life and cultural activities, leaving a lasting legacy reflected in the values of her daughters and grandchildren. Although Sandra loved Mobile, she never quite acclimated to the heat and humidity, missing the cool mountain air of her youth.
Sandra was a lifelong learner and shared her love of literature, art, film, and a myriad of other interests with numerous friends, family, and acquaintances. She also, loved teaching, starting as a French instructor at St. Luke’s Episcopal School in the 1970s. In 1992 she joined the University of South Alabama Art Department as an adjunct professor teaching Art History until 2005. Sandra loved the subject matter and her students, instilling them with a new appreciation for art. During the 1990s, she also welcomed her grandchildren to the world – Margaret, Dailey, Crawford and Alice. At that time, she became affectionately known as Grandboo. Sandra embraced their curiosity as her own, strengthening the bond until her last day.
Sandra Lee is survived by her husband of 39 years, Chris, two daughters, Amanda Dexter (Kendall) and Katherine Pitman (Skipper); four grandchildren, Margaret Duran (Spencer), Dailey Dexter, Alice Phillips, and Crawford Phillips; one great-grandson, Perry Duran; two sisters, Marsha Jones (Bernie Stills) and Carol Pepper; one brother, Stephen Jones (Diana); and one niece, Joanna Pepper.
