Following in his father’s footsteps, he attended the University of Alabama and Spring Hill College where he studied accounting. In 1959, he opened Sports Marine on Broad Street and was the first dealer for Boston Whalers in Mobile. He still has the first Boston Whaler to arrive in Mobile. His love of boats, motors, and the water continued throughout his life. He raced hydros on the Mobile River during Mardi Gras and fished as a child with his father on the “Sea Quail” before there was a bridge to Dauphin Island. He rebuilt a D Hydro and numerous other wooden boats. He enjoyed antique outboard motors and collected over 100.
He worked at Alabama Dry Dock and Shipbuilding for over 25 years in the purchasing department. He started as a stationery buyer and retired as the Director of Purchasing. He began his second career at American Tank and Vessel in 1994. His many friend and colleagues there were very important to him and those relationships kept him working until 2015. Their support has been invaluable over the last year for Thad and his family.
He always enjoyed his lunches and many friends across the country. They appreciated his sharp sense of humor. He was often described as “one of a kind”.
He is survived by his wife, Glenda, his children, Melissa (Keith) Richey, Frances (Greg) Martin, and Hunter (Jeanette) Partridge, and his only grandchild, Wesley Parrish. He is also survived by his sisters, Mary (Mike) Levy and Clair (Jack) Hamlin, and a niece and four nephews.
His family thanks his co-workers at ATV, his many friends, and his sitters, Tenisha, Monica, Judith, and Shirley for their care and concern during the last year.
Visitation will be held Saturday, July 23, 2016 from 9:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Pine Crest Funeral Home, with the service beginning at 11 a.m. in the Chapel. Entombment will follow in Pine Crest Mausoleum.
