Walter I. Cleverdon, a native of Mobile and resident of Point Clear passed away peacefully on December 27, 2023 with all his girls by his side at the age of 90. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Stephanie Sullivan Cleverdon, and his three daughters Stephanie (Steve, Sr.) Watson of Fairhope, Catherine (John III) Vulevich, and Marian (Knox III) Boteler, of Mobile. Walter is survived by eight grandchildren, John Steven Watson, Jr., Robert Walter Watson, Mary Hart Watson, Edward John Vulevich IV, Catherine Reynalds Vulevich, Eloise Hart Vulevich, Anne Gliddon Boteler, James Knox Boteler IV, and many family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Grove and Marian Hauser Cleverdon, and his brother John Hauser (Mickey) Cleverdon.
Walter was born in Mobile on March 20, 1933. He attended Old Shell Road School, followed by Murphy High School and received a BA degree from Principia College, in Elsah, Illinois. Upon his graduation, Walter served in the U.S. Navy as a pilot for four years stationed in Japan and the Philippines. Walter then went on to the University of Alabama where he received his MBA and formed many lifetime friendships. Walter began his CPA career at Ernst and Ernst in Huntsville and was later offered a
position at Smith, Dukes and Buckalew in Mobile. In 1970, he joined his father Ernest G.
Cleverdon at the Merchants National Bank (now Regions Bank) of Mobile where he began his 34-year career in the Trust Department. Walter retired in 2004 as the Sr. Vice President and Trust Officer. He was admired and respected among all his clients, colleagues and everyone at the bank. He served as president of the Lions Club of Mobile, the Athelstan Club, and United Cerebral Palsy of Mobile. He also served on the Providence Hospital Advisory Board, WHIL, and was a member of several Mystic Societies.
He was a knight in the Mardi Gras Court of 1960, and was voted the Bachelor of the Year in 1966 by a well-known ladies mystic society. After retirement, Walter, affectionately known as Pops to his grandchildren, loved traveling with his wife and friends all over the world, but his most favorite place was the Martini Porch at his Point Clear home. He loved watching sunsets and entertaining friends and family on “Grandparents Row”.
Walter’s Memorial Service is at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Chapel on the campus of Spring Hill College on Tuesday, January 2, 2024 with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Old Spring Hill Cemetery in Mobile.
