William Henry Black Jr.

Mr. Black was the son of Rev. and William H. Black, Sr. Mr. Black grew up in Monroeville, Alabama where he attended Monroe County Public Schools. He graduated from Monroe County High School and moved with his family to Mobile in 1940. Mr. Black served in the U.S. Army Cavalry during World War II in the South Pacific and Australia until he was honorably discharged as Lieutenant in 1945. Mr. Black attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute, now Auburn University, where he majored in Building/ Construction. He began his career with the Alabama State Docks Engineering Department in 1952, and retired as Chief Administrative Officer. He was a former member of Springhill Avenue Baptist Church where his father served as Pastor. He was currently a member and Senior Deacon of First Baptist Church of Mobile. He was devoted to his family and enjoyed gardening, building fish ponds and traveling throughout the world.

Mr. Black was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. and Mrs. William H. Black, Sr.; and his niece, Martha Roberts Elrod.

He is survived by his sister, Janie Black Roberts and her husband, A. Porter Roberts, Jr. of Mobile; nephews, William Porter (Sandy) Roberts and David August Roberts; great-nieces, Sarah Roberts (Nick) Hilscher and Lindsey Claire Roberts; great-nephews, William Mark (Kristen) Roberts and Jeffrey Reese Elrod; great, great-nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

The family would like to express its grateful appreciation to the Mobile Infirmary physicians and nursing staff, and to Infirmary Hospice Care for their compassionate service to Mr. Black.

A memorial service will be held from First Baptist Church of Mobile on Friday, December 16, 2011, at 1:30 p.m. The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. until service time at the church.
