
William (Bill) Winthrop Taube passed away peacefully on November 4, 2016 at the age of 103 years. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Daphne, Al on November 11, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. Visitation is prior to the service at St. Paul’s beginning at 9:00 a.m. A private graveside service follows at Memorial Gardens Cemetery. In the afternoon, a reception is planned at Westminster Retirement Village, Spanish Fort, AL from 3:30 to 4:30 for friends and family.
William (Bill) was born on September 3, 1913 in Cincinnati, OH. He was the son of William Henry Taube and Garnett Emma Randall Taube. He is preceded in death by his wife Derthia Whitson Taube and his sister Jean Taube McCowan. In 1916, Bill Taube’s family moved to Loxley, Al in Baldwin County to join Randall family members in their farming and business enterprises. He went to Loxley Elementary and Robertsdale High School. After graduation, the family moved to Mobile. He attended Spring Hill College, worked for several years and then attended the University of Alabama – College of Education. World War II came along and Bill was deployed to the South Pacific area for four years. Upon returning, he went back into education with the Mobile School System. His teaching and administrative experiences spanned 39 years – from classroom teaching to Assistant Principal (a fond one being at Vigor HS) to Principal of Glendale and Olive Dodge. He and his wife Derthia met one summer at the University of Alabama and married in 1956. They had a long and happy marriage. His life has been full. He has received recognition on state and national levels for his work in education. A life-long Episcopalian, Bill was active in the Episcopal Church throughout his adult life. He was currently a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Daphne where he last served as a greeter. Bill was also active in the community. Among other things, he was a Rotary Member and recipient of the Paul Harris Award. Throughout the years, Bill and Derthia enjoyed traveling, family, friends and learning experiences. In 2002, they moved to Westminster Village where Bill became involved in line-dancing, exercising, painting, musical skits and other activities. He will be missed for his corn bread and muffin baking skills, his independent spirit, his generosity and his care for friends and family. He is survived by a nephew, William (Bill) Mansfield McCowan, Jr, (Debra); a niece, Jean Katherine (Kay) McCowan Johnson (David), and Randall and Taube cousins.
