William (Bill) Powell Zundel Sr. passed away on October 25, 2023, surrounded by his family. Bill was born in Mobile, AL in 1946. He is preceded in death by his parents Ferdinand Charles Zundel Sr. and Martha Powell Zundel. Bill is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Betsy) Palmer Zundel, sons William Powell Zundel Jr (Brittany) and Jeffrey Galloway Zundel (Margaret), his grandchildren William Powell Zundel III and Jane Palmer Zundel, and his brother Ferdinand Charles Zundel Jr. (Sue).
Upon graduating from Murphy High School in 1964, Bill enlisted in the United States Navy and served aboard the USS Farragut. Bill proudly served our country for over five years and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. Following an Honorable Discharge, Bill earned a business degree from the University of West Alabama. After graduation Bill followed the family tradition and began working in the jewelry store that his father founded in 1935. He developed lasting relationships with his customers and loved to serve them in a career that lasted for over 55 years.
In 1970, Bill met the love of his life, Betsy, when they both were attending UWA. Bill took Betsy deer hunting on their first date, and despite her perfume disturbing the hunt he was smitten. They married in 1974 and celebrated 49 years of marriage in July.
Bill was extremely proud of his two sons. He loved teaching them how to hunt and fish. He patiently taught them how to throw cast nets the same way he learned from his father, and he spent countless hours on Mobile Bay teaching them the ins and outs of boating. To Papa’s delight his grandchildren shared a love for the outdoors as well. His favorite way to spend a day was on his wharf in Point Clear or the camp in Gainesville, AL.
The family will receive visitors at Springhill Baptist Church on Monday from 10-11am followed by a Celebration of Life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Mobile Bay Keepers or any charity you hold close to your heart.
