Bernard Sippin (Bernie), a lifelong resident of Monroe, Connecticut whose spirit and personality were as expansive as the global landscapes he loved and traveled, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2026, following complications from a stroke.
Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut to Irving and Bessie Sippin, Bernie’s life was defined by an unmatched blend of hard work, business acumen, community service, and a relentless thirst for adventure.
After graduating from the University of Connecticut in 1952 with a degree in accounting, Bernie teamed up with his brother, Max, to incorporate Sippin Bros. Oil Co., Inc., which began in 1919 with his father Irving. Through his business savvy and Max’s sales and interpersonal skills, the brothers grew the company from a small gasoline and tire business into a cornerstone energy, fuel, and HVAC provider. Bernie’s entrepreneurial drive didn't stop there-- Bernie, along with his sons, also founded and operated one of Connecticut’s leading motorcycle companies, as well as Monroe’s largest and successful commercial real estate companies.
Bernie was not only defined by his business successes, but also as an outdoorsman, world traveler, and riveting storyteller. His legendary hunting and fishing expeditions took him across the globe, eventually leading him to establish Sippin Safaris, a sports fishing charter based in Costa Rica. Closer to home, Bernie consistently found joy in the great outdoors--skiing in Vermont, flying, boating, fishing, and tending to his farm, where he raised everything from cattle and llamas to Christmas trees.
Bernie was also a devoted Monroe resident, who was named the town’s Outstanding Citizen in 2011--He served as a volunteer for 50 years with Scouting America Troop 62 and held leadership roles with the Stepney Volunteer Fire Department and the Monroe Chamber of Commerce. His induction into the UConn School of Business Hall of Fame and the numerous scholarships he established at his alma mater, stand as a testament to his belief in the power of education and hard work.
Of all his achievements, Bernie’s greatest joy was his family. He and his wife Lorrie cherished every moment spent with their sons, grandchildren, and extended family on holidays, family celebrations, travel and particularly winters spent at their favorite ski house in Vermont.
Bernie was predeceased by his devoted wife of 70 years, Lorraine, who passed in December at the age of 100. He is survived by his children: David Sippin (Elizabeth), Mark Sippin (Peggy), Gary Sippin (Mary Beth), grandchildren: Alexandra Rau (Andrew), Catherine Sippin (Ben), Lauren Sippin, Eric Sippin, Emily Sippin, and Kayla Landowne (Justin), and great-grandchildren: Carson, Vincent, and Evelyn Rau. Funeral Services and Interment will be private.
