age 69, died on November 22, 2012, surrounded by family.
Born in Seattle on September 3, 1943, daughter of Robert E. Hazelbrook Sr. and Irene Hazelbrook ;
Donna attended Lake City Elem, Jane Adams and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1961. She tackled various roles in her career life, having spent a great deal of time working with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as an administrative assistant. She was then presented with an opportunity to step into a new role working at the University of Washington as an administrative specialist with the UW Medical Center. On retirement from this job, Donna was able to put all of that additional time and energy into what she truly loved, the sport of purebred dogs.
Donna’s initial introduction to the world of dog shows came in the early 70’s, while living with her Miniature Schnauzers; Gretchen, Feisty and Tanny. As the girls started reaching their senior years, Donna made the decision to get a larger dog, the Rhodesian Ridgeback, on which Donna completed AKC titles on animals she both acquired and bred herself. Around this same time she also became quite active in the Northwest Orchid Society, breeding and showing Orchids. Donna was also a founding member of the NW Rhodesian Ridgeback Club.
As the big dogs started to turn grey, Donna moved her interest back into the smaller dogs, becoming very active with the Border Terrier. Once again Donna achieved numerous conformation titles, but also became involved with the “working” side of the dog fancy. She began obedience, rally, and other mentally and physically challenging activities (including her 4am wake ups to go tracking). Donna was also a founding member of The Border Terrier Club of Puget Sound.
In the end Donna was enjoying her newest addition, Regis, the Standard Schnauzer. Donna loved having a new puppy in the house, and attended training classes several times a week. The bond between herself and Rege was amazing, and they were truly destined for greatness. Donna is also survived by her last Border Terrier, Flute, and her two-legged family; Robert Hazelbrook Sr., Robert Hazelbrook Jr., Sandra Hazelbrook, Robert Hazelbrook III and Matthew Hazelbrook.
A Celebration of her life will be held on December 15, 12-2 PM, at the Phinney Ridge Neighborhood Center, 6532 Phinney Ave North, Seattle. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that a donation be made to www.takethelead.org or Guiding Eyes for the Blind.
