Urias, a lifelong resident of the San Gabriel Valley and 1999 graduate of West Covina High School, was first elected to the City Council in November 2018, representing District 6, and became mayor in December. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Cal State Los Angeles and began his career as an intern for Congresswoman Hilda Solis, eventually serving four years as her Field Representative. Urias also served as Senior Field Deputy and Deputy District Director for U.S. Representative Judy Chu.
Urias worked on several projects which included a coalition called North Riverbed Working Group, of which addressed homelessness on the Lario San Gabriel River Trail. The group, consisting of government officials from Azusa, Duarte and Irwindale, was formed in fall 2020 after it was discovered that two homeless men were responsible for starting the Ranch2 fire in the Angeles National Forest. In 2020 he also joined forces in a COVID-19 testing program for the neighboring cities.
Urias was dedicated to advocating and supporting diversity. He was generally soft-spoken person whom always took the time to look at all sides.
Urias is survived by his mom Rosa Urias, brothers; Christian and Steve Urias, sister; Ada Castaneda and 10 nephews, nieces and great nieces.
