Jesse Ray Mitchell was born September 13, 1936 in Blyville, Arkansas to the parents of John and Roberta Mitchell, however he was raised in Chicago, IL. He worked as a brick-layer for over 40 years. In 2008, he was baptized into the Lord’s body and was faithful until death. He enjoyed church and being a mentor to all that desired his wisdom and companionship. He always fought for the underdog being their voice and lifting others up and giving them encouragement. He loved to be around family and friends.
Troy caught Jesse’s eye while visiting her brother in Chicago over 35 years ago. He walked right up to her and asked for her phone number despite her being with her protective brother Levadus. She tells Jesse that she lives in California and he said it didn’t matter. Years go by and out of the blue Troy gets a call from Jesse telling her he was in town and wanted to see her; instead she sent her two sisters. Years later, she receives another call saying he is moving to California and asked for her ring size. Troy was clueless to why Jesse wanted her ring size and asked him to bring her some Chicago popcorn. He arrived with popcorn and ring in hand much to her surprise. On 12-20-08 they were married in their front lawn. Jesse was very determined; whatever he wanted he got it. He had a passion for life. He always had advice for the younger married couples, encouraging them to treat their spouses with respect.
He is survived by his wife Troy Mitchell, brother John (Mildred) Mitchell, sister Deola Mitchell, Aunt Jessie (103years old), son Mitchell (Tracy) Duncan of Litchfield, AZ, son Nevins (Brandi- LaTonya) Funchess of Chicago IL., step-daughter Yolanda Edwards of Glendora, CA, step-son LaShawn (Toi) Wells of Concord, CA, twelve grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.
