Porfirio "Rudy" Macias was born January 16, 1949 in Ventura, CA. to Guadalupe Macias and Mary Ruth Reyes. Guadalupe immigrated from Guanajuato, Mexico when he was 17 and Mary Ruth immigrated from Aguascalientes, Mexico as a child. He was a fraternal twin with his brother James, with 5 older siblings - Albert, Clara, Catalina, Theresa, and Thomas - and 1 younger sibling, Ruben.
His early childhood was happily spent with his brothers and sisters in migrant farm camps sleeping in tents and playing in the fields while taking great pride in how his mother was the fastest apricot pitter. Later, he made long lasting friendships with the kids he grew up with in the Estrada Courts in Boyle Heights. It was here he met the love of his life, Linda Banuelos. As a teenager, he moved to El Sereno and went to Roosevelt High School and also to Simi Valley High School when he moved in with his sister Clara and her husband Ed Cline.
On February 15, 1969 Rudy married Linda and they began their life together Just a few months later, on April 22, 1969 he was inducted into the U.S. Army. Rudy attributed his learning Morse code in high school to his initial assignment as a communication specialist which kept him off the front line. As it often happens in large organizations, he was transferred to where he was needed instead of where he was trained. Rudy spent his service loading munitions into artillery and was honorably discharged on December 18, 1970. Two years later, Rudy and Linda completed their family with the birth of their daughter, Jennifer.
Rudy is survived by his wife, Linda, daughter Jennifer and her family: her husband Mike and children James, Jacob and Michelle.
