Robert was born in Canton, Ohio to Irving and Blanche Bernstein. His father was an attorney and his mother was a stay at home mom. He went to school in Cleveland, Ohio. He married Velma in 1940 and had three children. Raymond, Richard, and Janice.
In his young years, he worked on a farm, and worked as a golf caddy to earn extra money. After that, he became a machinist. When his children were young, he learned the trade to become a tool and die maker. He was a very dedicated father and wanted to be sure they had everything needed and have a comfortable life. Because of this, he often worked many double shifts in order to provide the best for his young family.
During World War II, he was drafted and ready to report to duty when the government decided that he was more valuable at home with his trade as a tool and die maker.
He always liked to stay busy. He could build or fix anything he put his mind to. He watched his father as well as taught himself by reading “How To” books. He lived by the old adage “Make sure you know what you’re doing and do it right!!!”
During the course of his life, he had many hobbies. He loved yard sales and couldn’t drive past a thrift store without stopping in to look around! Some of his hobbies were playing the accordion, and fishing on his boat. He collected Police patches and memorabilia. He collected and sold coins, stamps and postcards. He also taught children about stamp collecting. He also enjoyed spending many hours on his CB radio. He became quite knowledgeable on it and at one point he was trained and qualified to use the CB radio in the event of a civil emergency. He also knew Morse Code and gained enough knowledge to teach classes.
After the boys were grown, he received a job opportunity in1967 and moved his wife and daughter to San Diego, California and work for the aerospace company Convair. On the side, he also was a part of the Sheriff Reserve in San Diego for 3 years.
Church and His love for God was very important to him. He was involved in the Lutheran Church for many years and served as a Deacon in Euclid, Ohio as well as in San Diego, California. He retired in 1983.
In year 2000, he moved into a very nice mobile home in Laverne, California, where he could spend his remaining golden years living closer to Pat.
He will be deeply missed.
