Dan Curtis Mitchell, 90, passed away on February 27, 2026. He was surrounded by his family when he went home to be with his Lord and Savior. Dan was a gentle and patient man whose deep faith in Jesus was the foundation of his life. He was a resident of Vestavia Hills, Alabama.
Born January 2, 1936, Dan grew up in Fort Worth, Texas. As a young adult, he served in the US Army, stationed in Germany, then transitioned to a career in Air Force Civil Service, and completed his career with NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. He retired in 1999.
At a church event in 1958, he met his loving wife and they married in 1959. Their 66 years of marriage were built on their dedication to each other and to serving the Lord. Dan faithfully served his church as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and sang in the choir. He was a patient and wise father and grandfather. While faith and family were core to his life, he also enjoyed the Dallas Cowboys, the Alabama Crimson Tide, and strawberry ice cream at any time.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Mitchell; his children, Cheryl Davis (Lain) and Stephen Mitchell (Sonya), and his grandchildren; Sarah Liddell (Davis), Katherine Mitchell, and Reace Mitchell. Dan was preceded in death by his parents, George and Vola Mitchell, and his younger brother, David Mitchell.
The Mitchell family will hold a family celebration of his life in early March. Dan Mitchell will be laid to rest at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, AL. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be given to Outreach Ministries of Alabama (https://omainc.org/donations/), an organization that Dan faithfully supported.
