James Melvin Phillips, Sr., also known as “Melvis”, passed away on August 31st, 2017 at the age of 68. James was predeceased by his parents, Tommy and Martha Phillips; a brother, Bobby Phillips; a grandson, Kaleb Phillips; and son-in-law, Jabo Johnson. James is survived by his loving wife, Judy, of 50 years. They were married in Brantleyville, Alabama on May 4th, 1967. He is also survived by his 6 children, Vickie Johnson, Wanda & Tommie McCall, Jammie & Bobby Eldridge, James & Alana Phillips, Terri & Calvin Carlee, and Christy & Frankie Stephenson; 3 sisters, Shirley, Alice & Bud, and Deb & Mike; 2 brothers, Thomas & Beverly and Terry & Shirley; 24 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a host of brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews; and a ton of friends. James loved washing his truck. He loved family gatherings and listening to Elvis. He definitely loved his Alabama football. “Roll tide.”
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 6, 2017 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Rockco Funeral Home (Montevallo). A Celebration of his Life will be held on Thursday, September 7, 2017 at 1:00 PM at Rockco Funeral Home (Montevallo), with burial to follow at Dargin Cemetery in Calera. Bro. Ray Smith will officiate.
