

On Sunday March 5th 2017, John (Jack) A. Reis died after a short battle with an autoimmune disease. Two days shy of his 77th birthday, Jack was called to be with the Lord. Born in Westfield, New Jersey, he was the son of the late Waldo F. Reis and Ursula E. Tetreau. He has resided in Shelby County since 1998. He was a graduate of Brown University and served four years in the United States Marine Corps.
Jack was a cantor at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. He brought love and joy into people's’ lives through his cooking and various facial hair experiments. Whether it was preparing a scrumptious feast or sprouting what will forever be known as “the pedro mustache” he continuously brightened the spirit of both his family and community.
Survivors include his wife, Maria Reis; ex-wife, Mackey Kean, 3 daughters, Laura Gilliland of Winston Salem, Nicole Reis of Maylene, Ashley Natress of Reno; 2 sons, John W. Reis of Charlotte, Tom Reis of Scottsdale; a sister Carolynn Kalellis, a brother Robert Reis; his stepmother, Florence Reis of Westfield, NJ; 7 grandchildren, Cara, Holly, Alex, Jacob, Talia, Bennett, Timothy; numerous nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Charles Reis, Richard “Dick” Reis, William “Bill” Reis, and Joan O’Toole.
There will be a visitation for John at Rockco Funeral Home in Montevallo on Thursday, March 9 from 6 – 8 pm. His graveside service will be on Friday at 2:45 at the Alabama National Cemetery.
