

Mayhan, Albert (Al) James Jr. , a resident of Montgomery, Al died Tuesday morning , September 28, 2010 in Montgomery. The Family will receive friends Friday , October 1, 2010 at St. Bede Catholic Church, St Bede Parish Hall, from 5 until 7 PM. A funeral mass will be at St. Bede School, Saturday morning at 10:30 AM with Father David Carucci officiating. Burial will follow in Alabama Heritage Cemetery with Leak-Memory Chapel directing.
Survivors include his wife Virginia, six sibling: Marlene Mayhan Gregory, John Mayhan, Robert Mayhan, Joseph Mayhan, William Mayhan and Ann Marie Mayhan Reinhout, seven children and fourteen grandchildren: Albert J. Mayhan III and his son Albert J. Mayhan, IV;Michael Mayhan and his wife Tracy, their children, Erik, Tara and Madeline; Diane Mayhan Weber and her Husband, Faustin, their children, Faustin IV, Cynthia, Aaron and Daniel; James Mayhan, his wife, Carrie, their children, Maria and Caroline; Mary Mayhan, her husband, Bob Dirmeyer, their children, Stacie and Anthony; Rita Mayhan Rubel, her husband, Dan, their children, Allison and Abigail; Daniel Mayhan, his wife, Gwendolynn.
He was born in Omaha, Nebraska July 10, 1934. He moved to Evansville, Indiana, where he Graduated High School in 1952. Immediately after graduation he inlisted in the United States Air Force, he had assignments stateside and Far East, and was Honorably discharged, September 1956. He married Virginia Marie Martin on November 9, 1957. Following his active duty service, he worked for General Foods Corp. as a Laboratory Technician and apprentice industrial engineer. Concurrently, he attended the University of Evansville, Evansville, Indiana, where he started his federal civil service career as a Computer Programmer Intern with the Air Force at Wright-Patterson AFB> Upon completion of the Intern Program he developed a computer system that calculated and forecasted equipment requirements for the entire Air Force. In February, 1965, he moved his family to St. Louis, Missouri, where he took a position of more responsibility with the U. S. Army Mobility Equipment command. In February, 1968, they moved to Washington, DC, where he was assigned to the Air Force Data Systems Design Center. In August, 1971, the Air Force moved the unit and his family to Montgomery, Alabama. In the subsequent years, he continued to be promoted to more responsible and demanding positions that covered providing and supporting enterprise computer systems to the entire Air Force worldwide. He attended and graduated from the Air Force War College in 1976 and 1977. His numerous awards include several superior performances, Federal Employee of the Year and Senior Civilian of the year in 1985. He retired in 1990 from federal service after holding several major leadership positions with the Air Force. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed many rounds of golf in his retirement. He was a leader and mentor to many younger civil servants and Airmen. He will be remembered most as a family man who devoted and loved his family and did everything he could to provide and support them. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Bede Catholic Church or the Alabama Kidney Foundation.
