

Alma Moreno McClurkin was born on July 5, 1927 to Alma Erline James and James Edgar Moreno. She passed away on Thursday, May 4, 2017. She grew up in Montgomery, AL and told stories of walking to First Baptist Church and attending Sunday school and walking with friends to school at Bellinger Hill, Baldwin, and Dear Lanier. She attended Florida State College for Women (FSU) for a year and then returned to Montgomery to take care of her “Old Mama” and to graduate from Huntingdon College with degrees in French, Spanish, and English. She returned to “Dear Lanier” to teach French and Spanish, sponsor Future Teachers of America as well as French and Spanish clubs. Her claim to fame was always that she taught Bart Starr and his wife, Sherry at “Dear Lanier”. She was active in the Methodist Junior Fellowship programs (MJF), Dr. Fisher’s Leper colony mission in Thailand through a church in Union Springs, teaching Sunday school, making vestments for the church, arranging flowers for the church, and directing children’s ministry programs--- all while fulfilling the Lord’s call to serve and setting examples for her children. She valued education so much that she began to work on a minor in Latin and Master’s in Library Science and Media at Auburn University. She then returned to Floyd Junior High as a Latin, English, Spanish teacher and Librarian. She taught over twenty years and loved her spirited students. She is preceded in death by her husband, David Earl McClurkin. She is survived by her children, Martha McClurkin Myers (Ronald L.), Earline Smith (Frank M.), and Mary Alma Neeley (Forrest); her grandchildren, John David Myers, Ronald Matthew Myers, Caroline O’Neil, Debbie Myers, Matt Smith, Tyler Casey, Adam Smith, Carrie Neeley Eberly, and Collier Neeley; and four great grandchildren. A visitation will be held on Sunday, May 7, 2017 from 1:00-2:00PM with a Chapel service beginning at 2:00PM at Leak Memory Chapel. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers include: John David Myers, Ronald Matthew Myers, Matt Smith, Adam Smith, Ethan Wade, and Collier Neeley. Honorary pallbearers include: Davie McClukin, Kirk McClurkin, Rob Peacock, Jeff Barker, Ronald L. Myers, Frank Smith, and J. Forrest Neeley. In lieu of flowers do a kind deed for someone or donate to a charity of your choice.
