

Betty was born November 17, 1946, in Greenville, AL to James Edward Smith and Emma Louise Smith. After growing up in Greenville with her 3 sisters, she moved to Montgomery, AL to attend St. Margaret’s School of Nursing. In Montgomery, she met Gary Perry, and they married on February 22, 1970.
She is preceded in death by her infant son; her husband of 47 years Gary Phillip Perry, Sr.; her parents, James Edward Smith and Emma Louise Smith, of Greenville, AL; and sister Jean Smith Helms (Roger), of Ozark, AL.
She is survived by her son Gary Phillip Perry, Jr. (Dawn), of Montgomery, AL; son Brian James Perry (Kimberly), of Savannah, GA; grandchildren Caitlin Marie Baker (David), Preston Tyler Perry, Garrett James Perry, Josie Victoria Perry, and Anna Richard Perry; great-grandchild Saylor Gail Baker. Sisters Ann Thompson (Wayne) and Martha Vaughn (James), along with many nieces and their families.
Betty will be remembered for her kind and compassionate nature, her love for her family, and her passion for nursing. As a teenager, Betty began her 50 plus years of nursing as a candy striper in Greenville. Most of her career, she worked as a nursing supervisor at St. Margaret’s Baptist South, and Baptist East all in Montgomery, AL.
Her legacy of love and service will live on through her family, friends, and the countless patients whose lives she touched during her career as a nurse. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
A special thank you to the staffs of Wesley Gardens Assisted Living, Charleston Place Rehabilitation and Healthcare, and Wetumpka Health and Rehabilitation for their care of Betty over the last year.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 3 at Leak Memory Chapel, with visitation beginning at 10:00 AM and the service beginning at 11:00 AM.
