

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Carolyn Stewart Martin, who passed on January 27, 2026 at the age of 85. She was a cherished member of the community, known for her unwavering commitment to the Lord.
Born on June 25, 1940 in Troy, Alabama, Carolyn grew up surrounded by family and friends who loved and admired her. She married her high school sweetheart, Burt Martin. She attended Troy High School, Hollins University, and graduated from Troy University majoring in Biology. She taught at Mountain Brook Jr. High School in Birmingham, AL. She exemplified a lifelong passion for selfless service in all aspects of her life including faith, family, and friends. She loved seeing the wonder of God’s handiwork in His creation with special interests in bird watching and flowers. Throughout her life, Carolyn touched countless lives with a servant’s attitude and a compassionate heart.
Carolyn was a long-time member of First Baptist Church where she served faithfully for almost 60 years. She loved traveling and serving the Lord with her beloved husband, Burt. She participated in over a dozen international and US mission trips. She was active in Amy Cooper Group Women on Mission, FBC Community Ministries, Women’s Prison Ministries and The Nehemiah Center Mom’s Program. She led many discipleship groups, taught First Grade Sunday School for over 20 years, and Women’s Steppingstone Class Sunday School teacher. Her community involvement included social and civic clubs, including Newcomer Club of Montgomery, President of Junior Woman’s Club, Merry Weeders Garden Club and Montgomery Republican Women Club. She was honored with the membership of Outstanding Young Women of America in 1972.
Carolyn is survived by her two children, Burton Wheeler Martin (Vivian Flowers) and Carolyn Martin Arnberg (Drew). Also, grandchildren Charles Edward Porter, Brian William Arnberg (Sarai), Sarah Arnberg Tisdale (Daniel), and Michael George Arnberg (Stephany), and five great grandchildren, Lydia Arnberg, Loic Arnberg, Boone Brand, Bolton Brand and Gideon Tisdale. Also, her sisters Betty Stewart Huffcut, Evelyn White Evins, and her brothers Robert Trogdon, Doug Lewis, and Walter Evins. Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents Dr. William Petry Stewart and Elizabeth White Stewart, her husband of 64 years, Burton Wheeler Martin, and her sisters Mary Stewart Trogdon, Lucinda White Lewis, and a host of relatives and friends. She will be deeply missed.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, February 7 at 10:00, at First Baptist Church reception area, followed by the funeral service in the Stakely Sanctuary at First Baptist at 11:00. A graveside service will follow the funeral at 2:30 PM at Green Hills Cemetery, 1621 S US Hwy 29, Troy, AL, 36079. Friends and family are invited to gather in remembrance and celebration of a life well lived.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to First Baptist Church of Montgomery Community Ministries, Nehemiah Center, 305 S. Perry St. Montgomery, AL 36104, an organization close to Carolyn’s heart.
