She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Fred B. Hughes, her son Carl Hughes, her daughter Leigh Huneycutt (David Huneycutt), one sister Cassandra Peacock (Lee Peacock), and brothers Larry Norris and Steve Norris (Judy). She was MyeMye to four grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
Charlene was born in Humble, TX where she was an only child to Ollie Mae Watson Irving and Warren Irving. Also, her Godmother Mama Madden was a big part in her life in Humble.
She moved to Tuscaloosa, AL where she was eventually crowned Miss Tuscaloosa 1959 and then was 2nd runner up in the Miss Alabama pageant.
Charlene was very talented and throughout her life she loved dancing, acting in the little theater, gardening, cooking, sewing, catering, entertaining…there was not much that she couldn’t do.
As a young mother, she was a stay-at-home mom who was very active in her children’s activities and often the organizer.
Charlene was the Fashion Coordinator at Pizitz for many years in the 1980’s, then she became a self-achieved caterer, hosting many beautiful weddings and celebrations.
Later in life, Charlene and her husband volunteered at the Archibald Center where she was voted Senior Volunteer of the year in 2004.
Charlene’s family was her greatest love. She was a fiercely devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She loved with her whole heart and was generous with that love. Her smile, cooking, love, and especially her laughter will be greatly missed.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation at Leak Memory Chapel, located at 945 Lincoln Rd. Montgomery AL, on December 23, 2025 starting at 10:00 am. The service will follow at 11:00 am.
