

Charles Edwin (Ed) Wheat, Sr., 85, passed away February 2, 2021, in Montgomery, Alabama, after a brief illness. Ed was born April 17, 1935, in Tallassee, Alabama, the son of Amos Stanley Wheat, Sr., and Beatrice Tennent Wheat.
After graduating from Montgomery Catholic High School in 1953, Ed worked for Johnson Motor Lines for over 20 years and John Patterson Technical College, where he taught truck driver training, for over a decade. Ed also honorably served as a SFC in the United States Army Reserve from 1957 to 1966.
Ed was a life-long advocate for his community. He was a member of Freemasonry for over 50 years, a past master, a member of Blue Lodge Montgomery #11, a member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, a member of the Grand York Rite of Alabama, and a member of the Alcazar Shrine, where he was Potentate. He was also a member of Montgomery Bass Masters and he was an integral part of East Montgomery Baseball and Softball. He was an active member of Dalraida Baptist Church for many years. Ed also sang in the adult choir and was a member of the Wesley Sunday School Class at Aldersgate United Methodist Church for the last 12 years.
Ed is survived by his wife Brenda A. Wheat, daughter Leigh (Donny) Burnett, granddaughter Erin Burnett, grandson Tripp Burnett, sister Dot (Gene) Sanderson (Stanley, NC), and several nieces and nephews. Ed is also survived by daughter-in-law Debbie Wheat Brantley and step-son-in-law Rob Grant (Pine Mountain, GA), 3 step-grandchildren, and their families.
Ed is preceded in death by his first wife Shirley Coon Wheat, infant daughter Julie, son Charles Wheat, Jr., step-daughter Karon Grant, his parents, 3 sisters (Mary, Lois, and Beatrice), and 2 brothers (Amos Stanley, Jr., and Joe).
Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery, and a celebration of his life service will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2021, at 2:00 pm at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Rev. Brian Miller and Rev. Steve Badskey officiating. Masks required. Honorary pallbearers will be Dennis Jones, Bobby Spaeth, Shaune Allen, Gene Sanderson, John Mitchell, Dale Webb, Rev. Doyle Roberson, Will Kilpatrick, and Jim Bryant.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either East Montgomery Baseball and Softball or Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
