

SMITH, David Monroe, 73, passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 20th in Montgomery, AL. David was preceded in death by his father, Jack Smith. He is survived by his wife, Bettye Fletcher Smith; daughter, Laurie Michelle Smith; son, Matthew Page Smith (wife, Katie Rolader Smith), grandchildren, Walker Jack and Lauren Page Smith; mother, Eva Nell Robinson Smith; sister, Cherry Hammett (husband George); brother, Charles Smith, Sr.(wife Dottie); brother, Doug Smith; sister, Peggy Hudson (husband Gordon), several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
Visitation for Mr. Smith will be Tuesday, October 24, 2017, at Leak Memory Chapel in Montgomery at 11:00 am, followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 12 Noon, with Dr. Gary Furr officiating. Graveside will follow at 2:45 pm at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, AL.
Mr. Smith earned his undergraduate degree from Huntingdon College where he also played baseball. He held a Master of Library Science degree from Emory University and worked for 30 years at Auburn University's Ralph Brown Draughn Library as Head of Cataloging Department. In addition, David served 20 years with the Air National Guard as a Master Sergeant. David was a member of several library organizations and also served many years on the City of Auburn Planning Commission.
David and wife Bettye, active members of Vestavia Hills Baptist Church, were happily married for 50 years. His sweet spirit and unceasing kindness will be missed by all who knew him.
