Donny was born in Sylacauga, Alabama, and spent his life rooted in central Alabama, a place that deeply inspired both his work and his art. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Judy Tomlin; his parents, James Howard Tomlin and Mary Lee Bell Tomlin; and his brother, James “Jim” Tomlin.
He is survived by his daughter, Alicia Tomlin; his sons, Keith Tomlin, David Tomlin (Carla), and Kevin Tomlin; and his cherished granddaughters, Natalie and Sophia. He is also survived by his sisters, Fran Tomlin Huddleston and Nancy Tomlin Meadows; his brothers, Billy Tomlin (Peggy) and Bobby Tomlin (Leigh); and sister-in-law, Judy G. Tomlin (James).
By profession, Donny was a landscape architect, but his creativity extended far beyond his career. He was a multi-talented artist with a lifelong passion for expression and craftsmanship. He painted avidly in watercolors, often capturing the beauty and character of central Alabama landscapes. He was equally skilled in woodworking, crafting everything from detailed pieces to custom fishing lures. He also found great pleasure in the art of grafting Japanese maples, and at one time had successfully propagated
more than 200 cultivars. He was affectionately known by many as the “Maple Man”.
Music was another great love of Donny’s life. An accomplished musician, he played many instruments and performed in several bands over the years, most notably The Continentals. His enjoyment of music was matched by his love of fishing, and he was a long-time member of the Central Alabama BASS Masters.
Donny was well-loved in many circles and known for his generosity of spirit. He took great joy in sharing his talents and teaching others, whether through art, music, or craftsmanship. His creativity, patience, and kindness left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held on January 31, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church 504 West Osceola St. Wetumpka, AL 36092
