Dr. Elba Magaña Morton met her Creator on July 5, 2025. She was born in Ahuachapan, El Salvador on January 16, 1936, to Dr. Arturo Simeon Magaña MD and Maria Sansivirini. She completed her secondary education at the Instituto Bethania in Santa Tecla, El Salvador. She emigrated from El Salvador in 1954 and received her PhD from University of Alabama, Master’s Degree from Auburn University, and Bachelor’s Degree of Science from Auburn University in Montgomery. She lived in Montgomery Alabama for over 70 years and had a wonderful marriage to Dr. Glenn Morton, PhD who passed away too soon in 2021.
Elba Morton was a very accomplished teacher with a great reputation and long legacy. She taught Spanish and Spanish Culture throughout Central Alabama from tutoring to high school to college for 50 years at many institutions including St. Jude Catholic High School and Huntingdon College. Her Spanish teams consistently won state and regional honors for excellence in Spanish exposition. Her celebration of Spanish culture extended to the public at large where she served as President of the Montgomery Spanish Club.
She always had a great love of travel including Europe, Latin America, Egypt, Greece, Israel, Hawaii and especially New Orleans and the Florida Panhandle. She had a quick smile and wit and was always the life of the party. She is cherished and survived by her sons, Scott Morton MS, Dr. John Morton MD, and Patrick Morton MBA and her four grandchildren Sarah, Rachel, Jack, and Isabelle Morton. She is deeply loved by us all.
A memorial mass was held for Dr. Elba Morton at St. Bede’s Catholic Church on July 12, 2025. The Morton family wishes to thank all of those who extended their condolences and provided so many acts of kindness during this time of grieving.
