We all feel your loss. We met your grandmother a few times. Hearing all the many wonderful things from her grandchildren made her very special to us also.

Dear Charles, Ray, Carl and Alan,

As we celebrate your mother's life, Barbara and I want to share a few of the memories that will always be with us.  She leaves behind a tremendous legacy of good works, including all the good influence she exercised as a mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and aunt.  

One word we don't hear much these days is gumption, which includes the qualities of initiative, resourcefulness, and common sense.  Freda had a great deal of gumption, along with a great sense of humor and a positive outlook. Like many in her generation, she was faced with big challenges and was prepared to take them on.  It was only in the past few years that I learned she grew in up the coal fields of Pennsylvania where high school was not available.  No problemshe moved to Ohio to live with relatives where she could go to high school.  Later, she married Uncle Robert and they moved to Alabama to pursue opportunities and start a family.

It was a great treat each year when your family came to visit in Ohio.  It seemed like organized chaos, with your mother and father allowing just the right balance of freedom and oversight. One of my early memories of your mother was when we were visiting in Montgomery, and one of you came in to report that two of the brothers were fighting.  She responded:  May the best man win!  Maybe it is just that I had sisters for siblings, but I thought that kind of parenting was extraordinary and fantastic.  It seemed like she knew when to intervene and when not to.  What strikes me in retrospect is that Aunt Freda and Uncle Robert taught their boys how to behave well without constant oversight.

Aunt Freda was a natural storyteller, and we would all pay close attention to the yarns she would share about the boys, relatives, and neighbors.  She could always see the humor in a situation and she always seemed to have an answer for any challenge.  One of my best memories was when she came to my mother's 90th birthday celebration and flew into Baltimore Washington Airport.  Due to a mix-up of some kind, we were not there to meet her and she was stranded in that large airport with no phone.  Aunt Freda's gumption and good humor produced another good story from what could have been a very stressful afternoon for someone else. [See Barbara's account below.] 
   
Your mother was a great friend and support to my mother.  I know Mom felt this way throughout her life, and she loved those times when they talked on the phone or met in person.  Mom was so happy that Freda, Carl, and Mary Beth and her family were able to come together for her 90th birthday with the Yankee McDevitt's.

Freda touched so many lives in such a positive way.  We will treasure her memory.

Roland McDevitt

Freda (then 85) flew on her own to Maryland for Mildred's 90th B-day party. I planned to pick her up at the airport and was in a meeting when I received a call on my cell phone.  It was Freda, who unknown to me came in two hours early, saw I wasn't there and decided to walk around the airport until I showed up.  A kind man noticed her, and offered his assistance (and his phone).  I scrambled to the airport and apologized profusely to which she answered, Oh, it was fine.  I knew if I wandered around, I would get some attention from someone!  

By the way, Freda packed her own apron so she could help out in the kitchen  That weekend, the two sisters-in-law had a marvelous time trading stories, especially ones about the outrageous mother-in-law they shared!  Mary Beth and I took them out one day for a ladies lunch at Mrs. Kay's Tavern- the proprietors seated us in a separate wing of the Inn all to ourselves, and Freda and Mildred gabbed while Barbara and Mary listened for 2 hours.

Michelle and Family,  I feel like I knew your Grandmother.  Your love for her was so evident.  She was a special lady.  Her children and grandchildren honored her in many ways.  Heaven gained a special Jewel.  Blessings and Peace to you all as you Celebrate her life.  Much love.

Michelle & family...While didn't know your grandmother, I can sincerely give thanks for her life. You have honored her with every loving word I have heard you speak concerning her. Prayers for her loved ones in the days ahead. May yall have what she would want for each of you.
