
Caroline T. Barker, affectionately known as “Doodle” to friends and family, passed away on January 20, 2026, at the age of 92. She was born February 1,1933 to the late Charles and Hazel Sanderson Turner in Montgomery, Alabama.
Caroline graduated from Charity Hospital School of Nursing in New Orleans, Louisiana. She married her high school sweetheart, James E. (Jim) Barker, a recent graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. Together they embarked on a long, fulfilling life focused on children, family, friends, church, and service to others.
Caroline will be remembered for her loving embrace, concern and care for others, easy laughter, and abundant hospitality. Her curiosity and genuine love of others drew people to her and could turn a complete stranger into a lifelong friend in mere minutes. Her presence made the world brighter, and her memory endures in those she loved.
Lt Col. James Edward Barker, US Army (Ret.)
James E. (“Jim”) Barker, passed away on February 1, 2025, at the age of 91. He was born on July 22, 1933, at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama.
Jim graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in June 1955 and went on to serve his country with honor. A dedicated soldier and leader, he was a combat veteran of the Vietnam War, exemplifying courage and commitment throughout his military career.
On April 7, 1956, Jim married the love of his life, Caroline Turner, and together they built a family filled with love and laughter. Jim will be remembered for his kindness, intellect, dedication to family, and sense of humor.
Caroline and Jim are survived by two sons, James Jr., and John David, a daughter Melissa, and a large extended family including several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A joint Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held for Caroline and Jim on Saturday, May 2, 2026, 2:00 p.m., at Greenwood Cemetery/Leak Memory Chapel, 945 Lincoln Road, Montgomery, Alabama, 36109.
