He was preceded in death by his parents John Louis and Clara Greer McDonald, as well as sisters Iris Crelot, Jane Yeldell, and Priscilla Daniels. John is survived by his wife Gayle Grisso McDonald, children Julie (Billy) Goodson, John Lindsey (Kim) McDonald, Grant (Jennifer) McDonald, and Kevin (Kelly) McDonald. He is also survived by his grandchildren Charles (Hannah) King, Robert (Caroline) King, Jared King, Daniel King, Mason McDonald, Madison McDonald, Caleb McDonald, and Aubrey McDonald, and great-grandchild Ezra John King, as well as many nieces and nephews.
John worked for the US Army Corps of Engineers in Mobile, Alabama and Sacramento, California. While in Sacramento, he met and married his wife, Gayle. He worked for the federal government for 30 years as a mechanical engineer at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia, Maxwell Air Force Base, Montgomery, Tyndall Air Force Base, Panama City, the State of Florida, Tallahassee, and Sherlock, Smith, and Adams in Montgomery. John was a faithful member of the University Church of Christ in Montgomery where he was incredibly active, serving at one time as an elder of the church.
In his life, John was known to enjoy many of the technical aspects of the world around him. He was a self proclaimed scientist of all things tomato and gardening. He could often be found digging through his hand-made raised garden bed, putting together new greenhouses, and taking notes on the effectiveness of his methods. He enjoyed creating and building items to better those around him and continued to do so as long as he possibly could. He was constantly inspecting every building he went into, examining the ways the architect made each decision and noting how he would have done differently. We are all convinced he is inspecting all the dimensions and fine craftsmanship of the mansion God has prepared for him in heaven.
