John was born in Ramer, Alabama, on August 12, 1941, to the late James Franklin Register and Emily Elizabeth Register. While working for Standard Oil Company, John met the love of his life, Virginia Lee Hobbie. The two were married in the spring of 1967 and made their home in Montgomery, where they shared over 58 years together.
John was a devoted husband, father, and friend whose life was marked by loyalty, strength, and deep love for his family. Together, he and Virginia built a life centered on family, commitment, and caring for one another.
In 1964, John joined the Army National Guard, serving for six years as a radio operator. During his service, he was part of the unit that helped protect participants in the historic Selma to Montgomery March.
John began his career with Standard Oil Company in the early sixties, he was promoted to the Auditing Staff in 1969, a role that took him throughout South Alabama and West Florida. During his 23 years with Standard Oil, he earned numerous awards and held several leadership roles. He served as an auditor until 1978, when he retired from auditing and purchased the Carol Villa Chevron Station on Eastern Boulevard. John owned and operated the station until the early 2000’s, when he sold the business to Interstate Oil Company.
Before becoming an auditor, John was active with the Blue-Gray Softball Association and the CIA neighborhood. When the neighborhood began its annual Fourth of July Parade, John lovingly made wooden rifles for the boys to use during their reenactment of the Revolutionary War. He was also actively involved in neighborhood Christmas caroling until he moved away.
During retirement, John remained deeply engaged in the community. He especially enjoyed his involvement with the Republican Party, where he loved posting campaign signs and served faithfully as a poll checker for many years.
A lifelong lover of the water, John was an avid fisherman. He treasured time spent on his boat on the Alabama River and trips to the coast for deep-sea fishing.
John is survived by his wife, Virginia Hobbie Register; his children Emily Hobbie Register Dees (Leslie), John Martin Register, Paul Whiting Register (Jenni), and Virginia “Ginny” Lyn Carl (James); five grandchildren John Darrell, Emily, Whit, Cole, and Jackson; his brother James M.
