John Lewis Tompkins, age 80, of Montgomery, Alabama passed away on Saturday, October 21, 2023. Born in Bonifay, Florida to Alvah Tompkins and Blondell Miller Tompkins, he grew up in Jacksonville, Florida and moved to Montgomery in 1966. Active at First Baptist Church of Montgomery, he retired as President of BBRL, Inc. He is preceded in death by his parents, Alvah and Blondell Tompkins and his brother, Al Tompkins. John is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Lovelace Horn Tompkins and daughter, Carrie Tompkins Blanton (Rick); and his siblings, Jimmy Tompkins and Patricia Lepianka.
Carrie shared these thoughts about her dad:
John Tompkins, an incomparable husband and father, will be remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him as one of the most interesting men in the world – an international traveler, an avid outdoorsman, a true craftsman, an unrivaled storyteller, and a sharpshooter with a high security clearance. But even more, John was a selfless provider, an encouraging friend, and, despite his many remarkable talents and accomplishments, a truly humble individual. Throughout his career, John’s reputation for integrity preceded him beyond his expertise, integrity that pervaded every aspect of his life as a reflection of his relationship with the Lord. Outside of work, he most enjoyed being in God’s creation, whether following dogs in search of the next covey or simply sitting in the woods at daybreak listening to nature wake up. His hands could master any medium, be it sewing leather to make scabbards, shell pouches, bridles or spur straps, or planing wood boards to build countless cabinets, drawers and workbenches. He shared his talents tirelessly with those around him, leaving behind both physical reminders and indelible memories manifesting his love for his family and friends here on Earth. Although we mourn his loss here, rest assured the Lord is using his talents to help prepare our heavenly homes for when we meet again.
A Family and Friends Visitation for John will be held Thursday, October 26, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 11:45 AM at First Baptist Church, 305 S Perry St, Montgomery, Alabama 36104, followed by a Celebration of Life memorial service at 12:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in John's memory may be made to Alabama Baptist Children's Homes, www.alabamachild.org.
