Joyce McAllister Brooks, 86, died peacefully at home on Saturday, April 25, 2020. She was born on November 24, 1933, to William Arthur and Ethel McAllister. She was the youngest of four children and a graduate of Sidney Lanier High School. She met and fell in love with Roland Brooks, whom she married on August 10, 1956. They were happily married for more than 63 years. Joyce worked as a bookkeeper with Upchurch Oil for more than 30 years, then with Montgomery Public Schools until she retired. Perhaps her greatest joy was being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her selfless love was a beautiful outpouring of the love she had for her Savior.
She is survived by her loving husband, Roland Brooks; her two daughters and sons-in-laws, Donna Barrow (Bert) and Denise Allen (Mickey); her five grandchildren that were her pride and joy, Jordy Cheney (Ben), Brook Byers (Mark), Blake Barrow, Jessie Adams (Daniel), and Chandler Barrow; two precious great-grandchildren, Neeley and Hannah Byers; one sister-in-law, Joyce McAllister; and six nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, William and Ethel McAllister; and two sisters and brother, Ruth Mixson (Dwight, Sr.), Reba Redden (Luther), and Ross McAllister, Sr.
In her grandchildren’s own words, “she loved with a deep, unconditional love”, “she showed the love of Jesus to everyone around her”, “she was an angel on earth, a true treasure, and a rock to everyone of us”, and “we are celebrating that she is finally free from the battle she fought so long and hard. We love you Me and will miss you always!”
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 2, 2020, at Greenwood Cemetery in Montgomery, Alabama. Due to COVID - 19 and the limitations of visitors the service will streamed live on Leak Memory's Facebook page. Her grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Flatline Church (flatlinechurch.org). Flatline Church is located in the former Chisholm Baptist Church where Joyce was a longtime member, her father was a deacon, and Roland’s great-grandfather was a founding member.
