A lifelong resident of Montgomery, Ala., Larry passed away on October 18. He is survived by Lynne Meredith Huett, his wife of 51 years; his daughter, Holly Huett Leverette (Chad) of Auburn, Ala.; son Jeffery Scott Huett (Mary Lynn) of Johns Creek, Ga.; and grandchildren Faith Leverette and Parker Huett. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willis and Louise Huett and his brother, Frankie Lynn Huett.
A celebration of Larry’s life is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, October 23, at Eastern Hills Baptist Church in Montgomery, with a brief graveside service to follow at Greenwood Serenity Memorial Gardens in Montgomery. Visitation precedes the service at 9 a.m. at the church.
Larry had a strong faith in Christ that was woven through his life and will serve as his most precious legacy for his kids. He was a long-time lay leader and deacon at Eastern Hills Baptist Church.
He was an active presence in the lives of Lynne, Holly, Jeff and his grandchildren. He served as sports coach, skilled gardener, attentive husband to a dedicated teacher (a role that tended to spread to the whole family) and enthusiastic family Uber driver.
Larry was a track athlete and 1968 graduate of Sidney Lanier High School. After service in the U.S. Navy and a 34-year career as a claims examiner with the Veterans Administration in Montgomery, Larry squeezed the absolute most from retirement. Whether with his prayer breakfast buddies or a group of fellows that met for coffee every day for years, one of Larry’s favorite things to do was to hold court with his friends. Larry found the humor in most things and loved to laugh. He also served many leadership roles in a local chapter of the Exchange Club.
With a Baptist hymnal beside his favorite chair, George Jones CDs in his truck and Saturday evening Gaither Vocal Band blaring on the television, Larry loved Gospel music. He loved to travel all over the U.S. with family and friends and for decades spent many, many weekends at Panama City Beach. He strategically placed bird and squirrel feeders through the yard because he loved to watch them from both inside and out. He was a fan of the University of Alabama, Montgomery Biscuits, and his adopted Baylor Bears.
We’ll miss him, but he is at peace. Today, we celebrate his life and legacy. To share a memory visit https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/montgomery-al/larry-huett-10404693.
