Lawrence “Larry” Beverly Campbell, 84, of Montgomery, AL gently laid down the burdens of this earthly life and entered the everlasting peace of his Savior’s embrace on March 23, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on August 4, 1941, in Gadsden, AL to Velma and Fred Campbell, Larry’s life was a testament to devotion—devotion to faith, to family, and to the quiet excellence found in a life well-lived. From an early age, he carried a deep love for the game of golf, a passion that would shape not only much of his journey, but his character. As a young man, he achieved remarkable success, winning multiple amateur golf tournaments in the State of Alabama, including the State Junior Golf Tournament at just sixteen and the Alabama Open in 1965.
After graduating from Gadsden High School in 1959, Larry continued his education at Memphis State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. There, he distinguished himself not only as captain of the golf team, but also as president of the Kappa Sigma fraternity and president of the Interfraternity Counsel—roles that reflected both his leadership, easy charm, and his gift for drawing others together in fellowship and friendship.
On August 21, 1965, Larry married Jimmie Ann Guest, beginning a beautiful marriage that would span sixty years and be marked by love, laughter, adventure, and steadfast devotion. Together they built a family rooted in love that would ripple across generations, raising their two children, Ann Heather Campbell and Lawrence Troy Campbell, and creating a home that would become a place of warmth and belonging for many.
In 1967, Larry answered a call to serve his country by joining the United States Army Reserves during the Vietnam War. Following his honorable discharge, he pursued his passion for golf professionally, sharing both his skill and his love of the game as a golf pro at Golf-a-rama in Birmingham, and later at Goodyear Golf Club and Gadsden Country Club. In 1970, he reached a pinnacle of achievement, becoming a PGA professional and competing on the PGA Tour—a reflection of years of perseverance and discipline.
After his time on the PGA Tour, Larry journeyed to Opelika, where he served as head golf professional at Saugahatchee Country Club, and later into public service, working in grassroots leadership for Governor Fob James’ campaign. In 1978, he made Montgomery his home, continuing to raise support and funds for the Fob James administration with the same determination that marked every chapter of Larry’s life.
In 1983, Larry began a new chapter in commercial insurance, a career he carried until his retirement in 2020 from Aronov Insurance. In his later years, he found joy in life’s quieter treasures—time with family and friends, and the collecting and sharing of history through his business, Campbell’s Coins and Collectibles.
Larry was welcomed into eternity by his parents; his brother, Bill Campbell; and his sister, Carolyn Campbell. He leaves behind a legacy of love in those who continue his story: his devoted wife, Jimmie Ann Campbell; his daughter, Heather Thornton, and her husband, Steve Thornton; his son, Troy Campbell, and his wife, Kelly Campbell; his chosen daughters, Amy Holmgren, and her husband, Brad Holmgren, and Lindsay Sanders and her husband, Wesley Sanders; his grandchildren, Stephen Thornton and his wife, Jordan Thornton; Cole Campbell; Campbell Thornton; and Cameron Campbell; his chosen grandchildren, Madison Bailey, Wilson Sanders, Kate Sanders, and Millie Sanders; and his great-granddaughter, Eloise Anne Thornton.
Each of these lives stands as a testament to the love, guidance, and devotion he so freely gave.
To know Larry was to witness a life illuminated by Christ. His faith was not only spoken—it was lived. His presence could brighten the heaviest day, his smile could welcome any stranger, his wit could charm and bring out laughter in anyone around him, and his counsel became a compass for those blessed to walk beside him.
Though he has stepped beyond our sight, his light has not dimmed—it has only been made eternal, and it lives on in all those who loved him.
A celebration of Larry’s life will be held at Larry and Jimmie Ann’s church home, Grace Pointe Church of Christ, 1565 Ray Thorington Road, Montgomery, AL, 36117 on Saturday, March 28 at 2:00 p.m.
The family will begin receiving friends at 1:00 PM. Burial will immediately follow the celebration of life at Alabama Heritage Cemetery, 10505 Atlanta Highway, Montgomery, AL 36117.
Even in sorrow, we rest in the promises of God, for even though our flesh fails us, the promises of God never fail. As Scripture reminds us:
“But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.” — 1 Thessalonians 4:13–14
Until that joyful reunion, we entrust Larry to the eternal peace of Christ, where sorrow fades, and love endures forever.
If desired, the family asks that flowers be sent to Leak Memorial Chapel and that donations be sent to the Larry Campbell Memorial Fund Prayer Garden at Grace Pointe Church of Christ.
