Mary Gwyn Oliver Johnson, age 95, passed away on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 at Eastdale Estates, Montgomery, where she resided since 2015. She was born outside Albertville, Alabama, to Mark and Pearl Oliver the youngest of three children in a farming family. She was a lifelong active member of churches of Christ in Gadsden and Guntersville, and more recently in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida. She loved singing, reading, travel, and attending church. She will be remembered for her kindness and generosity, her love for friends and family, and her joyful spirit and lightheartedness.
She grew up on a farm on Sand Mountain and graduated from Albertville High School. She met her husband, Leonard, while working in a factory in Gadsden in the early years of World War II. He later joined the Navy and they were married in November, 1946. Together they raised three children: Steve Johnson, Centerville; Dr. David Johnson, Montgomery; and Patrice Johnson, Ft. Walton Beach. While raising a family, she worked as a teller for Alabama City Bank.
Mary was preceded in death by her brother, Byron Oliver, and her sister, Julia Kelly, both of Albertville. She is survived by her husband, her three children, two grandchildren (Zach Johnson of Okinawa, Japan and Ryan Johnson of Franklin, Tennessee), and six great-grandchildren.
Burial will take place in a private ceremony at Memory Hill in Albertville. The Johnson family would like to thank the congregations of the churches of Christ in Guntersville and Ft. Walton Beach, who welcomed Mary and Leonard into their fellowship and hearts over the years. We also thank all the staff at Eastdale Estates and especially Mary’s caregiver, Rita Johnson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mary’s name to Agape of Central Alabama.
