Winifred Taylor “Peggy” Hillis, a native of Montgomery, entered into the blessed rest of everlasting life July 28, 2021 and reunited with her beloved husband, Seaborn Wendell Hillis. Peggy was born on September 3, 1935 in French Lick, Indiana. She is preceded in death by her parents, Fred William Taylor and Kathryn Kearby Taylor. A woman full of energy and various talents, Peggy was most passionate about her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her children, Kathy Ann Patterson and Julianne Hillis Stroh (Gerald), and her grandchildren, Garrison Blake Patterson (Joanne), Taylor Patterson Holsombeck (Brett), Seaborn Coleman Patterson, and Kathryn Stroh Britt (Preston), and great-grandchildren Oliver, Anna Kathryn, Julianne, Andrew, Hillis, Henry, and Charlotte. She is also survived by her sisters Shirley Ann Love and Margaret Kerns of Indiana.
Peggy was a graduate of Indiana Central University. While in school, Peggy married the love of her life, “Seab,” whom she had dated since middle school. Seab began coaching high school basketball, and Peggy became his biggest cheerleader. Shortly after, Seab began working with Franklin Life Insurance Company, and Peggy spent several years living in Indiana and Illinois before she moved to Montgomery in 1970 where she raised her children and became an active member of the community. She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Montgomery and was on the Board of Directors for the Southern Debutante Cotillion. Peggy was a long-term supporter of the American Cancer Society and various Christian organizations in the Montgomery community.
Peggy loved arranging flowers and has been known to stop in an unsuspecting person’s driveway to clip greenery or stop on the side of the interstate to gather flowers in bloom. She loved to decorate for holidays and other celebrations and routinely spent her weekends arranging flowers for local weddings or putting together elaborate centerpieces for the next birthday in the family. In her later years, she often reminisced about traveling the world with Seab and loved to tell stories about their adventures together. Peggy was an avid sports fan. On football Saturdays, Peggy never missed a game, but she quickly grew bored with “blowouts” and scanned the channels to find a close game. She often could be found shuffling a deck of cards during her weekly bridge game at Montgomery Country Club or stopping for a quick “pick me up” consisting of either an ice cream cone or a Starbucks Frappuccino. She was known to her grandchildren and their friends as “Mumpie,” and she loved them all like her very own. Peggy had a larger-than-life personality and cared deeply for others. Even if you met her one time, you likely would be on her weekly “luv u bunches” texts sent out to her family and friends. She never met a stranger and no one ever forgot meeting her. Peggy will be dearly missed by her family and friends, but we know she is busy making flower arrangements in the Kingdom of Heaven.
A visitation for Peggy will be held Saturday, July 31, 2021 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church, 305 S Perry St, Montgomery, Alabama 36104, followed by a celebration of life memorial service at 11:00 AM with Dr. Jay Wolf officiating. A private family graveside is set for a later date.
Masks are appreciated. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to First Baptist Church of Montgomery. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.Leak-MC.com for the Hillis family.
