

Bannon, Robert William, formerly of Montgomery, AL, died Wednesday, May 16, 2012, after a brief illness. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until 11:00 am at Leak Memory Chapel, 945 Lincoln Road, Montgomery, Alabama on Friday, May 18, 2012. A graveside service will be conducted immediately following visitation at Greenwood Cemetery by Father Michael Sreboth, Our Lady Queen of Mercy Catholic Church, Montgomery, Alabama. Bob had resided at Camellia Place in Auburn, Alabama since 2009. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Auburn, and a memorial mass will be held there on a later date. Bob was born March 5, 1920, to Ruth Pickard and James E. Bannon, Sr. of Auburn, New York. He graduated from Holy Family High School in 1938, and entered the US Army Air Corps on March 17, 1942, where he served as navigator on a B-17 bomber. He flew thirty combat missons over Europe during WWII from Snetterton-Heath, England. He married Julia A. Bannon on October 5, 1943. He was discharged from the US Army Air Corps on November 11, 1945, and he was employed by A. Berney Jones, Contractor, in Montgomery, Alabama. There he served as vice-president, chief estimator and project manager until 1970 when he joined Sherlock, Smith and Adams Architects. He worked there as chief estimator and quality control officer until he retired in 1989. He is survived by two sons, James (Susan), Auburn, AL, and Michael (Becky), Wetumpka, AL; two grandsons, Brad Bannon, Cullman, AL, and Rob Bannon, Birmingham, AL; one granddaughter, Laura Bannon, Birmingham, AL; sister-in-law, Helen Struthers of Montgomery, AL; seven nieces, Gail Ramsey (Jeff), White Plains, GA, Anne Hendricks (William), Montgomery, AL, Susan (David) Jerva, Linda Atkins, Theresa (James) Kehoe, Cheri Ann Jupin and Roberta Bannon all of Auburn, NY; and one nephew, Edward Struthers of Mobile, AL. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Julia; his sister, Ruth Atkins; and his brother, James E. Bannon, Jr. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a favorite charity.
