
Born to Otto Erick Haack and Margaret Burns Haack, Bob grew up in Ft. Dodge, IA. He joined the Air Force in April of 1953 at the end of the Korean War and was stationed at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery before deploying to Japan for a year. Bob earned the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal while on active duty. He was honorably discharged in March of 1957 as a Staff Sergeant and continued to serve as a reservist until 1961.
After leaving the military, Bob remained in Montgomery and married Helon Dunn in 1958. He pursued a career as a buyer and later purchasing manager and material control manager at Von Gal Manufacturing for over 39 years. In 1966 he was a charter member of the Central Alabama Purchasing Management Association and later served as President, Director of National Affairs, and Director at Large. He became a Certified Purchasing Manager (CPM) in 1975 and received lifetime certification in 1990.
He was active in the United Way Campaign, both as a worker and as a team captain, from 1967 to 1999. He was also active in YMCA youth programs and Scouting, including Order of the Arrow. He supported the American Red Cross and donated more than 10 gallons of blood during the course of his lifetime. Bob was an active member of Whitfield United Methodist Church, an avid bowler, and a general sports enthusiast.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Helon Haack; his son, Robert O. Haack Jr. (Margaret) of Huntsville; his daughter, Rebecca Ann Haack of Birmingham; his brothers, Richard Haack of Ft. Dodge, IA, David Haack (Grace) of Wappingers Falls, NY, and Don Haack (Brenda) of Sutherland, IA; his granddaughters Allison Parcus (Jason) of Harvest, AL and Jessica Haack of Huntsville, his great-grandson Noah Parcus, and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be on Saturday, December 31, 2016 from 1-2 pm at Leak-Memory Funereal Home in Montgomery, AL. The Celebration of Life Service will be at 2 pm at the Leak-Memory Chapel. A graveside service will follow at Montgomery Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The American Lung Association or The American Macular Degeneration Foundation.
